Kaleidoscope To Host Student-Staff Art Show

May 1, 2014

Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation will take over the entire BSOA gallery to stage its first ever Student-Staff art show, opening May 16.

This will be Kaleidoscope’s most comprehensive show to date and the show will feature art in almost all mediums created by staff who are experienced artists, and their students who range in age from 4 to 12 years.

A large, on-going art installation piece will be installed in the main exhibition space of the BSOA, providing an interactive experience in addition to all the art on show.

Teachers are excited about showing their students’ latest works, created during recent art classes and camps. Each pieces showcases the multi-step creative process they are taught at Kaleidoscope. Artistic inspiration for these works were provided by many international artists including American Pop artist Wayne Thiebaud, Swiss German painter Paul Klee and African Senufo people.

Kaleidoscope founder and director, Fiona Rodriguez Roberts, said, “How can we teach students to think outside the box, if our teachers aren’t taking those artistic leaps themselves? Not only are they taking these leaps, they are encouraged by fellow staff and they use each other as sounding boards. We consider KAF to be a conducive environment for risk taking and collaboration.”

Corrina Rego and Jerome Stovell will be showing very different works in the Edinburgh and adjoining galleries. Mr Stovell will be presenting “Organus [Series 1] Roots Rock Reggae.” Fusing traditional and digital art techniques, Stovell will present images of rocks and roots as highly textured “nature scapes.”

Mr. Stovell explained, “ I wanted to show that there is true beauty and originality to be found in the simplest forms of nature – things which we routinely overlook.”

A life-size installation of three-dimensional sunflowers is one of more than a dozen mosaic pieces Mrs Rego has created for the show. She has repurposed sea glass, slate, china plates and even old keys and oxidized pennies, and each finds its place in Mrs Rego’s large and eclectic mosaic collection.

“The inspiration for my show pieces actually came out of the lesson planning for our Art and Me programme and exposing children to the mosaic medium,” Mrs Rego commented.

Teacher Amanda Harkness is planning a display of graphically manipulated digital photography, complete with a Quick Response code, so viewers can hear her musical inspiration through a cell phone app.

Mrs. Rodriguez Roberts, a trained artist who has exhibited her work both in the US and in Bermuda, will also be showing new work.

The staff artwork will be available for purchase. The show runs until June 3rd. Bermuda Society of the Arts opening hours are: Monday through Friday 10 – 4, Saturday 10 – 2. Admission to the KAF Student-Staff show is free.
