Author Janet Mock To Join Club Via Video Chat

May 13, 2014

The Bermuda National Library [BNL] has launched its Not Just Another Book Club programme, aiming to bring Bermuda’s readers together in order to discuss challenging topics in a safe environment.

The club’s first meeting, set for May 15, 2014 from 6.00pm through 8.00pm, will be joined by Janet Mock, author of a book that shares her story of personal transformation.

A spokesperson said, “Not Just Another Book Club is the exciting new programme created by the Bermuda National Library [BNL] and the Friends of the Library to promote discussion of sensitive and challenging topics maturely and respectfully in a safe space.”

Head Librarian Joanne Brangman explained, “It is not the first book club that we have had, but we are looking to do something different with this one. We are interested in partnering with local organisations to feature a book that is aligned with their specific cause. We believe it is an excellent way to promote your cause and educate the public through literature.”

Ms Brangman added, “This month we are partnering with the Human Rights Commission and have selected the ground breaking book Redefining Realness by New York Times best selling author Janet Mock. Janet’s Redefining Realness: My Pathway to Womanhood, Identity, Love and So Much More is an inspiring true story that sheds light on being young, multicultural, and transgender in America.

“Ms. Mock will join the BNL discussion via video chat on Thursday, May 15. The discussion is one night only and the facilitators for this month are Zarinah Codrington, President of the Friends of the Library, and Zakiya Lord from the Human Rights Commission. Limited copies of the book are available at the Main Library or at local bookstores.

“Janet Mock’s profile was first published by Marie Claire magazine in which she stepped forward for the first time as a transwoman. Those 2,300 words were life-altering for the People.com editor, turning her into an influential and outspoken public figure and a desperately needed voice for an often voiceless community.
