Photos & Video: Labour Day March, Speeches

September 1, 2014

[Updated with video] Crowds of union members, family, friends, supporters and politicians from both sides of the aisle turned out to the Labour Day celebrations held at Union Square today [Sept 1] outside the Bermuda Industrial Union Headquarters. Prior to the march taking place at 11.30am, the crowd was addressed by Government and Opposition leaders, along with representatives from the different unions on the island. We will have additional coverage of Labour Day later on, and meanwhile our first set of photos is below.

The slideshow below contains almost 100 photos from today’s march:

  1. Unbelievable says:

    Look light in attendance.

    • Raw Onion says:

Yes, attendance has dwindled over the years. I don’t go to the marches anymore as I do not support the actions of the leadership of the unions (BIU and BPSU). I do believe people still believe in unions but as an individual, i’m smart enough to think for myself. I’m sure over the next 10 years, we will see a further decline in the march attendance if the unions maintain their current leadership, ideas and associations.

      • Kunta says:

Ya attendance looks light but don’t let that fool you, we still have de masses on standby, all they need to do wait for de call and they WILL be there, just like Custer at Little Big Horn.
        LMFAO

        • hmmm says:

You know Custer and his men didn’t survive, and their reinforcements maintained that they heard the rifle signal late in the the afternoon.

          they effectively didn’t show.

So that is a terrible analogy

          • Kunta says:

Hey Dreamer, you missed de point, I was referring to de masses of workers to de masses of Indians Custer didn’t see.
            Duuhhhhh

  2. Building Bermuda for All says:

I feel the same way as Raw Onion.

  3. Coffee says:

    Coffee looks damn good !

    • Toodle-oo says:

aaah , you must be the sweetheart gently wiping your nose with Charmin .

  4. World Traveller. says:

Very small crowd compared to previous years..the Bermudian people are sick of the lies and deceit that is spewed out.

  5. Anon says:

You’d be smiling for the camera too if you just got a 16.67% increase from all your members!

    • hmmm says:

They voted themselves the increase. just like the PLP when they got into power. It ain’t about you, it’s about them.

  6. Realist says:

The Unions did good for the workers in the past.
Now economic changes caused by the previous govt have made workers and management suffer.Demands can no longer be met yet the Unions continue with the same line of thought as in the 60-70′s era. This is not wise as blood cannot be got from a stone. Should their be more industrial action during these hard economic times, the workers could be hurt more. The leadership of The Unions surely recognize this but are driven by the lust for power.
We will see if the lust for power is obtained at the cost of the workers, only time will tell.
OBA you have a monumental task ahead of you.Bermuda was/is in such a dire position as a result of mismanagement, that it is going to take a miracle to bring us back!

  8. Peggy Burns says:

I, and many others, feel that the BIU SHOULD NOT have invited representatives of the OBA Government to address the Labor Day gathering because of their history of blatant disrespect and disregard for the people of Bermuda–more specifically, the entire BIU family. When I questioned why this was done, I was told that it was in keeping with ‘tradition’. My response to that was that ‘tradition’ can be broken (in this case should have been broken), in the same way that the OBA have broken and continue breaking promises to the people of Bermuda. Self-loving, principled, protective people would in no way expose or subject their families to dishonest, troublemaking beings. BIU, we are very displeased that you unleashed the OBA wolves among the sheep. Theirs was only an outward show–they came to make an appearance–show their faces, and that’s it. To listen to the voices of the untrustworthy OBA did not edify but agitated.

    • Hmmm says:

PLP were destroying jobs toward the end of their reign, whilst the OBA are helping create jobs….who said they were labour, cos it sure ain’t the PLP.

    • PBanks says:

But surely, Labour Day is about the workers, right? By making Labour Day an Us versus Them affair, you’re hindering the causes you claim to support.

If you’re going to ban the people representing whichever political party was elected to run the country, from speaking, you’re disrespecting the majority of the voting population.

    • LOL (Original TM*) says:

And there it is the Peggy Burns Mental Illness destorying any thought of unity in Bermuda and her people to shreds one comment at a time.

      LOL

      • Kunta says:

WELL……. she kinda has a point, that’s like de Black Panthers inviting de Ku Klux Klan to their rally.
        LMFAO
