December 9, 2014

[Updated - arrest made] A large contingent of police, including what appeared to be armed officers, were seen at various places across the island this morning [Dec 9], with the police confirming they were “looking for key individuals in the Prince Edness murder.”

On Sunday evening, police responded to a shooting in Southampton that saw 29 year old Prince Edness shot and killed, and the suspects fire at a police officer who was chasing them.

This morning, Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “The Police Service conducted early morning searches looking for key individuals in the Prince Edness murder,” adding that ”areas of interest” included certain parts of Devonshire, Pembroke, and Southampton.

“Police would like to apologize to area residents for the inconvenience this morning, however we would like to assure them that this is a necessary step to ensure safety across the island,” Mr Caines said. ”We are reminding people that if you see something, no matter how insignificant you believe it is, to say something.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1739 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.

Update 9.45am: As of this writing, the heavy police presence can still be seen in at least one area.

Update 10.31am: The police confirm a 20 year old Southampton man was arrested in connection with the murder of Prince Edness, and another man is still being sought by police.

“As a result a 20 year old Southampton man is in police custody and another man is still being sought by police.

“We would like to apologise to all the affected neighbourhoods that may have been inconvenienced as a result of our activity.

“We would also like to thank members of the public who have worked with the police and encourage continued community assistance to bring the offenders to justice.

  1. Walt white says:

Say who you are looking for. If the public “has truly had enough”, it could probably make your job easier and expedite things. Also i hope the airport is on lockdown. Is there anything in place that if/when people of interest with the BPS are automatically flagged on check in? I really hope there is some sort of system in place for that aswell.

    • Jonny rocket says:

if they say who they are looking whats to stop vengeance being sort against that person and they may only want them for questioning. Thats why they dont release the names because it will put that persons life in danger.

      • Umm.... says:

Or they may turn themselves in as being in custody would be safer than being in hiding.

      • Walt white says:

These guys live in danger 24/7, thats their decision, they wake up in the morning, no productive tasks for the day. stop protecting these guys. productive people can be found for questioning. why hide if you have no reason to hide? If a little bit of pressure makes these guys turn themselves in, or makes nana and aunty stop harbouring and acting oblivious, then put the name out there.

        • not Emery says:

Who do you know that’s apart of this lifestyle? Maybe the police should be talking to you since you know it all Walt.

Also. It is THE DUMBEST idea to suggest that the police reveal the name of the person they are looking for. Other than the personal safety of the suspect, the suspect could simply flee the island, the airport isn’t the only way to leave this island either.

Also smart Walt, how do you know if the person they are looking for doesn’t lead a productive life. They could simply be looking for someone who was identified by bystanders as having a complete view of the incident and can help identify the actual killers.

          Lastly R.I.P Jason

          • Walt white says:

Point got missed (most definitely), some parts of your comment are not even worth acknowledging (i.e. me knowing these cockroaches), 160+ people got it though. Only thing i can agree with, is R.I.P. Jason. Also, 800-8477 for Crime Stoppers, since your well informed on “desperate escape attempts”

          • UnWanted says:

@Not Emery, if you truly believe that the suspects don’t know that the police are looking for then you are perhaps the dumb one here. When you are wanted, you know it! Think about it for a minute, the police actually knock on doors and ask people, ” do you know where person “x” is “? That is why the hide. I am also quite certain that those that may seek revenge also know by now who the wanted are!

If the person the police are looking for “leads a productive life” and had nothing to hide, the police would simply go to their home, family members home, place of employment or call them and ask them to come in. When you hide, chances are you have something to hide.

@Not Emery, based on your “RIP Jason” comment, it looks like you have lost a friend or family member and I am sorry to see that. However, chances are that you know something or have heard something because people talk. If you want this killing to continue and perhaps lose someone else close to you, do nothing. However, if you want this to end sooner, encourage everyone you know to call the police (even if it is through Crime Stoppers) so that this can end.

Trust me, it will end one way or another. History will show that every gang, cartel, mafia, or whatever you want to call it, eventually collapses and implodes from within if the police or community don’t take them down first! Many will die, many innocent people get hurt (physically and otherwise) and eventually the few that are left grow up, flee, are left physically and / or mentally disabled, are drawn to religion, or change their lives. But one thing is certain, the gang members as you know them today will not be alive or in power in 3 – 5 years. Save a friend or family member – talk! Or, prepare to attend another funeral in the near future!

  2. Richard says:

yup thats how they do it in the caribbean they put your name in the news and tell you to come in

    • what we dont know says:

sometimes arrest doesn’t mean that person did the crime, sometimes going to airport doesn’t mean they did the crime, they may know who did it,but who will protect them and their families.

  3. Captain Obvious says:

It’s pretty safe to say that airport officials are well aware of the situation and who to look out for. I’m sure the suspect is hiding out somewhere. It would be pretty ignorant if they assume they can fly out 2 days after a murder, when there’s always a police presence at the airport anyway.

    • Ruthless says:

I guess the one Police are looking for in connection with the Happy Valley Grocery double shooting swam all the way to Africa????

  4. North Rock says:

If and when they convict these dudes…its time to make a change in living accommodation for the future…send them to either Jamaica or the UK. Save us money and it will certainly show these guys they ain’t so tough after all.

    • Raymond Ray says:

I also agree with having convicted premeditated murders incarcerated elsewhere as oppose to having the Bermudian public spend up to,(or beyond) $80,000:00 annually keeping them in good heath :-(
This type of individual don’t deserve the privilege of having people visit them weekly for x-amount of years here in Bermuda. If family or friends wish to visit then by all means do so but not here in this Island!

      • fedup says:

Why do so many of you feel that ‘some other’ countries taxpayers should pay for the incarceration of Bermudians? Are you really that entitled or stupid? These are Bermudians, take responsibility for your own criminals, you made them. You are the same people who vehemently oppose foreigners coming to Bermuda to work.

        • Triangle Drifter says:

Who said anything about how to fund these thugs overseas? Yes, we should be paying for them overseas. Yes, we could save lots of money having them overseas.

Depending on demand, charter Con Air to transport a group to & a group returning once or twice a year. There must be a nice toasty desert with a prison in the middle of it somewhere that can house these guys.

        • Hmmm says:

No, we pay, but it costs us less to send them elsewhere than house them behind bars here. I think we should sent them.

I’m surprise that some countries haven’t signed up to recieve prisoners to help pay for their prison facilities.

Turkey may be up for it.

          • sage says:

You are all so ridiculous, life is 25 years max, then they come back with a doctorate in criminality, violence and hatred. Then we will really be up the proverbial creek.

      • sebring says:

hey ! why not put those found guilty of such crimes in a nature reserve and fend for them selves like eat what you grow televise and make it into a tourist attractions with mayor security so they do not scape the fenced area with screens all around and what ever happens inside will be of the’re own doing ! of course medicines and medical treatment should be provided but the notion of having to buid their own shelter find food etc! will be the biggest deterent ! they can live a normal live inside with out giving the tax payer the added burden!plus i can i hit tv show making the local government some much needed cash !

      • Hurricane says:

Where do you people come up with this “send them somewhere else”, they are our problem why should they be going somewhere else.

        • Triangle Drifter says:

The call to “send them somewhere else” is to save money. It costs $80,000 a year to house them in the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed at Westgate.

Costs per prisoner per year are much cheaper elsewhere. If some 3rd world country where prisoner costs per year are only say $10,000 & they charged us $20,000 per year it is a win win for both sides.

Sure conditions in such a prison overseas are going to be pretty harsh but who cares? These thugs want to run around doing what they do then they need to see what real hard time is all about.

Bet that once the word gets out how miserable life is in one of those prisons there will be a drastic reduction in crime.

          • Creamy says:

I think sending them overseas is also designed to make their lives as miserable as possible.
25 years in a Peruvian jail might calm a few of these idiots down.

        • um just saying says:

@ Hurricane, obviously the way we are dealing with our problem is not enough to deter their behaviors nor does it scare them into choosing a different lifestyle. I wish Westgate Inn was a place that these thugs were terrified to go to, but it isnt.

      • um just saying says:

I would truly like to see that money going into programs that can thoroughly educate, counsel, and provide these young men/women with choosing a different lifestyle. Maybe also help the parents before their children reach this point.

      • jonah says:

And lets ensure that the driver that gets into their car while intoxicated and kills an innocent person on a bike gets shipped away also – binge drinking, followed by driving while drunk, followed by a horrible accident may not be premeditated but it is avoidable and death is death..

      • justice for all says:

I agree Raymond – this practice used to be done years ago in Bda, where convicted murders where sent to England. I don’t know, but in my opinion, it doesn’t seem like “they” are interested in imposing harsher penalties today, it’s obvious “they” feel Westgate is a deterrent which in reality it isn’t. I would say unless the victim is an important figure, a harsher penalty of this sort will be imposed. It’s all about who the victim is.

      • Oh really says:

Your telling me if your child if you have any committed such a terrible crime that just like that you’d be okay with them getting sent away to another country. Not being able to visit them or anything. You’ve got to be kidding me. I do not condone what the young men or women are doing but come on crimes have been going on for how long? And some people end up changing their life around.. For example the lawyer we all know changed his life. We need not to comment names but before we go shipping our black men away let’s find other avenues to fix the problem and before u comment and say well it’s clear u have it all thought out. I don’t . But we as an island can come together to come up with a solution …

    • Islander says:

And maybe in return we could take a few of the petty criminals off of their hands.

    • Smiths says:

Do you think the British Govt just accepts people like this? No, they accept them, but at a major cost to the Bermuda Govt, ie you and me.

Sorry, but are we missing the point here? Stop asking for solutions overseas, isn’t the issue that the communities of East and West sort their act out?

Why is Bermuda paying for thug life and bad parenting?

  5. um just saying says:

@North Rock, I agree with you. I am so sick and tired of busting my butt everyday just for part of my hard earned money going towards the care and shelter of these thugs, who terrorize ppl, dont hold down a real job. I would rather have my money go towards the children of these criminals, and their victims. That way we may put a stop to all this nonsense.

  6. Sorry Sir says:

Funny how we only see the police crack down like this is when one of their own is affected. If they never fired at the police, I doubt we would have seen police react like this so quickly.

I may sound like I’m being negative, but lets be real for a moment. Think about it.

  7. john doe says:

Send them south america if found guilty of murder

  8. damn.... says:

and in some unrelated news….i am SO HUNG OVER

  9. scott says:

Other countries publish the names of suspects in high profile investigations, it helps bring the persons to justice as they either turn themselves in or people give them up. By publishing names of persons of interest it will take way the incentive to carry out such crimes as it will lower the bar for name being published from probable cause to possible association. This wont impact the 99% of law abiding citizens.

  10. FOR REAL says:

BPS must know who these individuals are or better yet when a certain member is targeted who or what territory is suspect. why they dont assign officers to follow these people 24/7. it is BDA remember 22 by 1 mile. i could sleep better with a lil less speeding tickets and lil more death by gunshot prevention. lets be the presence that stops the violence before it starts. I took serious offense to shooting at nationals just yards from BPS HQ and i am no longer on force. if they do not fear the ones protecting innocence then wat hope do any of us have. LIFE MATTERS!! This is everyones problem. God be with these families of lost ones and our island in this FORSEEN TIME.

  11. Oh,I see now says:

I guess this will serve as a warning to those abroad DON’T COME BACK.

  12. tom cooke says:

So you guys want send these guys to a ” tough” jail.. where the prisons are run by the gangs… white, black, Latino. .. the ariain brotherhood, MS 13… you want them to learn there ways then bring them back here.. if you get locked up at 25 for 30 years… it’s a life time… I was all for hanging at one time. But lock em up for 30 years..no pension nothing….

  13. Oh,I see now says:

yup thats how they do it in the caribbean they put your name in the news and tell you to come in

The down side to that is these fools DON’T ask questions they just shoot.

  14. Disgusted Bermudian says:

Are they on their way to arrest the next person in the West a lot of police cars heading that way as I type. I pray they are, I’m so tired of this drama.

  15. haha says:

funny how fast it took…but when guys up d second get shot nobody gets locked up…smh.

  16. Peace to All says:

6 or 7 cars raced in a westerly direction past the Paget Post Office a little while ago, and at least 1 went speeding along past Modern Mart on South Road. Hopefully they are catching another culprit.

  17. #justsayin says:

You ppl sound silly to me… Yea you can ship our worst criminals to other countries for harsher conditions but when they get out think about how much larger their criminal network will be not to mention the things they will pick up and bring back to Bermuda and teach. Just sayin prison is like collage 4 criminals so do we really want to send them to the Harvard of prisons… just a thought…

  18. Raymond Ray says:

At $80,000:00 per year to house an inmate / prisoner in Bermuda :-( I’m sure we can find other Islands / Countries that will be extremely grateful if receiving half that amount to lock-up Bermuda’s harden criminals i.e. them convicted of premeditated murderers :-(

    • jonah says:

Until that person is a person that isn’t from the hood and wears a shirt and tie…Ray shhhh!!!!

    • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

i make 40.000/annum…supporting more than 1 person…can you give a detailed breakdown of why it costs 80.000 to babysit a prisoner?? someone or somebodies making toooooo much money. i bet i as a born n bred bermudian will not get the answers i seek.

  19. Free WorldBoss says:

This is all by design black on black crime, we as a people need to come together and stop the madness it’s funny to me how when someone dies of this nature people forget all the wrong that individual has done no I am not saying that this is rite nor am I condoning it but lets be honest if you live a certain lifestyle there are consequences live by the gun die by the gun that saying has bin around before all of us where born, in the words of the late starchilds mother hurt people hurt people, at the end of the day we are all a product of our environment even tho we may all live on the same island we all come from different walks of life in closing sleep in peace all my black brothers #stopthemadness

  20. Keep it 100 says:

I have one question!!!! Don’t care who it offends!!! Why is it that every time someone affiliated with this gang is hurt or killed, the police seem to go into overdrive!!! Tired of seeing the police protecting the wrong people..

  21. real talk says:

Good people, one of the main reasons police must think hard about releasing someone’s picture and name before that person goes to court is: lawyers will then suggest their client did not get do process or fair treatment. They will say the only reason why their client was identified in an id parade (line up) was because their face was out in the media, and thus they never will stand a chance of fairness.

  22. Oh,I see now says:

I may sound like I’m being negative, but lets be real for a moment. Think about it.

They are cracking down because these fools are becoming more blatant. What difference does it make they are catching them.Next thing you will get upset they are catching them on a Friday and not Wednesday.

You can not see the forest for the trees …….think about it.

    • Sorry Sir says:

But the Police themselves cannot act like a gang. They can’t give special treatment. They shouldn’t be “Looking out for their own”. Every case is important. I’m all for the cracking down, but do it for every case. Not just because your own got shot at. The police shouldn’t act like a gang. Period.

  23. Oh,I see now says:

I was all for shipping them away at one time but that’s why we are in the situation we are in now.

We need to clean and tidy our own mess AKA…..raise our OWN children properly raise boys to be men not men set in their ways.

  24. Your World And Mine says:

Brothers lets put the weapons down and come together!! We need to have African classes for our students. They need to understand their value! WE ARE KINGS!

    • Just wondering says:

What the hell are African classes?

      • justice for all says:

I think “your world and mine meant” they need to read up on our history

    • Blueman says:

      Kings of what??

    • justice for all says:

Not only African classes, these guys need to do some reading. With all this crime on Black on Bllack and killing each other, our ancestors who fought so hard for our people must be turning over in their graves.

  25. Oh,I see now says:

Put the burden of paying for gangsters on the families I bet mommy would quickly get tired of coming to court for little bobby.Pay for their food, clothing, any educational classes and medical needs why should John Q. Public have to take it on.

I bet things would be a lot different around the house if every month they received a bill from the goverment to house the same young men they spoiled rotten.

Be a parent now or later your choice…………

  26. Randy says:

This is why I am a firm believer in the fact that murderers should be hung dont waste taxpayers money nor allow the younger generation to be able to look up to them !!! You kill someone that family has to go without the lifetime contribution of the deceased! !! And so should your family go without you!!! But you people are sissyfied !!! Bermuda better wake up !! If you kill you shall be killed !! Not be rehabilitated nor housed at our expense! !! You are a murderer and you shall receive the same as you gave !!!

  27. Unus sed leo says:

    Premeditated…to have intent = {collusion}π !
