Speaker Of The House: “Enough Is Enough”

December 12, 2014

This morning’s [Dec 12] session in the House of Assembly began with MPs receiving a warning from Speaker of the House Randy Horton who said “enough is enough,” he expects “greatly improved standards of decorum” in the House and to “disregard the standing orders risks immediate suspension from the House of Assembly.”

The Speaker said that last week’s behaviour by some members of the House — which resulted in a police complaint — drove him to make this morning’s statement.

Audio excerpt of part of the Speaker’s warning:

Mr Horton said, “There was a duty and expectation that instances of unsatisfactory conduct by honourable members would cease. They would become a thing of the past.

“Sadly, that has not been the case. Last week’s behaviour by some members of this honourable House have driven me to make this morning’s statement.

“Honourable members, I have no doubt that you agree unequivocally that the people of Bermuda elected us foremost to be of service to them, to work effectively at providing solutions to the many challenges that our island faces, to improve our island’s standard of living overall, and to be the standard bearers for leadership in Bermuda. Yes, to be standard bearers for leadership in Bermuda.

“Honourable members, it is important to realize that we are under a microscope. Our people – and I emphasize, our young people and our senior citizens in particular – are watching us. Our schools and our churches are watching us. Business leaders, local and international, are watching us. Potential investors are watching us. The world is now watching us.”

    • Barracuda says:

Awww , you still sucking lemons?

Whatever you term it is.. The speaker said and I quote “people of Bermuda elected us foremost to be of service to them, to work effectively at providing solutions to the many challenges that our island faces, to improve our island’s standard of living overall, and to be the standard bearers for leadership in Bermuda.” Well guess what the voters of his constituency are now unrepresented as he canvassed to speak on our behalf and represent us.. Soooooooo how is this sour lemons??? Please elaborate,, thanks

        • Strike fund says:

By being Speaker he is servicing the people of Bermuda. His call to stop the silly behavior in the House indicates that he is trying to be the standard bearer of leadership, as you quoted, and encourage both sides to work effectively.

          • Impressive says:

Okay,, I believe in Santa Claus and Rudolph aswell.. I may even build a chimney for this big event,, smh

        • Kunta says:

          He speaks with fork tongue.
What he did is like responding to a mayday signal finding the vessel, telling the distressed occupants I”ll be back with help to bring you in, then forget all about them and then become a spokesperson for Search and Rescue !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          My people.

  4. Rhonnie aka BlueFamiliar says:

Well done, Mr. Speaker. And, please, don’t back down. Both sides need to be reminded that they are there to do a particular job and personal differences can not be part of that job.

  5. Terry says:

    Randy is a PLP MP.
I am glad that he takes his appointment as Speaker for the Peoples House Serious.

For that he must be congradulated .

    • Raymond Ray says:

      I agree with you Terry
“I am glad that he takes his appointment as Speaker for the Peoples House Serious.”

      Thanks Mr. Speaker!

    • Common sense says:

FYI he is elected my MP’s not appointed.

      • Terry says:

The speaker is elected by the ruling party.
Have a nice day and do some research.

        Shalom.

  6. bluebitd says:

The children of the oposition just cant have there way all the time.
the goverment of the day is trying to clean up the financial mess that the previous administration had left after 14 years of absolute mismanagement.
thank you mr speaker for doing a difficult job

  7. Y-Gurl says:

It all starts at the top, today in Bermuda we seem to have no more respect, people don’t respect the Police, youths don’t respect their elders, lots of children don’t even respect their parents and then we have to listen to mature adult well paid elected officials behaving like out of control disrespectful clowns we no longer have to ask where this behavior comes from.

  8. mrkeys says:

Thank You Mr Speaker. I agree wholeheartedly! Hold these elected officials accountable. The people of Bermuda did NOT elect children on a playground. ALL sitting MP’s were elected to bring about change and work for the people. You’re very right, the eyes of not just the island, but the world are on you. Pull up your socks and let’s get to work.

  9. Coffee says:

Randy’s pension should be safe . #32 send him into retirement !

    • Kangoocar says:

We have ” impressive ” higher on the thread who still isn’t finished sucking his/her lemons and you coffee, still not finished eating your case of sour grapes!!! Get over it, we at least had two sensible plp mp’s, Terry Lister chose to do the honorable thing and retire as opposed to being connected to you bunch of miss fits and Speaker Horton also took the high road and accepted to posistion of Speaker, and he is doing a good job!!!

      • LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL says:

MAN!!! Do you ever stop ?

        • LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL says:

I mean really, you live on here don’t you?

          • Kangoocar says:

Ummm!!! You do realize the fact that if you know I am on here a lot, that means you are as well??? So what was your point??? Or is just ok when the plp trolls are on here????

  10. Cleancut says:

Enough is enough? Can the OBA change the speaker if he is not carrying out his responsibilities?

    • Creme Brulee says:

Having a PLP Speaker effectively gives them an extra seat as the Speaker only votes in case of ties… Very much in everybody but the PLP’s favour.

  11. watchfuleyes says:

Well the power and control lies with the Speaker of the House, who has up to now not done his job.

  12. watching says:

Oh please. He is so biased in favour of the Government it is ridiculous. Seems like he only ran for Parliament in 2012 under the PLP because he knew he wouldn’t win otherwise.
I hope he doesn’t plan on running again in 32 because we don’t want him.

    • SMH says:

watching: I read your posts and the hate that emanates truly saddens me. You obviously only care about your party succeeding, no matter what the cost is to your fellow Bermudians. I hope that one day you will see the light and want what’s best for the everyone because in the end, whether you like it or not, we’re all in this together.

      • Carlton Smith says:

Impossible for ANY party to succeed without Bermuda as a whole succeeding first.

Such ia the illusion of party politics.

There has NEVER been a successful political party in all of Bermuda’s history under these grounds.

    • Double Standards says:

So because he isnt playing the PLP’s game of wanting to topple a democratically elected government he is now no good to you lot?

Man, you are one twisted individual.

  13. Joey-Bag-O'Doughnuts says:

Mr Horton, you should bring the cane you used at Warwick Sec and apply to those dissidents.

    • I agree says:

I was one of those who got the cane from him. I deserved it at the time as do these lot now.

  14. Pundit says:

Mr.Horton and Mr.Lister new the PLP were a sinking ship. Mr.Bean who dislikes homosexuals and is alleged to make remarks to women is the leader of The Opposition. They, Mr.Horton and Lister, must have thought”,wow I cannot be a part of this crowd.”

  15. concerned says:

I continue to be bothered by the attacks on Speaker Horton. Today he is accused of turning his back on his constituents by becoming Speaker.Did.Speaker Lowe turn his back on his constituents hen he became Speaker? If so why was he re-elected twice after turning his back on his constituents? It really is time for this foolish talk to stop.

    • Impressive says:

No Speaker Lowe didnt turn his back on his constituents because the voters that elected him were aware when they voted for him that he would serve as the Speaker if he did win the seat, thus they knew that they would not be represented and had the opportunity to way that reality in their decision making.. The present speaker ran on a campaign of looking out for the constituents, and now the people have to pick up the pieces, big difference.

      • Kangoocar says:

One thing I can’t stand is a liar!!! And “impressive” you are just that!!! This has nothing to do with representation of “32, if you were actually honest, you would say, you are really angry that he accepted the posistion of Speaker of the House, at the request of the OBA!!!

  16. Triangle Drifter says:

So far so good until Zane got going. Thought for a moment that he was going to show DeSilva the door.

  17. Common Sense says:

I vividly remember visiting Warwick Secondary School when Randy Horton was headmaster and had earned both the respect and admiration of most of his students and staff because he was a disciplinarian and someone who really cared about the children under his care.

Unfortunately, he now has a bunch of adult children under his care, and he clearly realizes that he must adopt the same disciplinarian approach to the conduct of some of our MP’s.

Rather than criticize and snipe at the Speaker we should all endorse his comments and support him 100% in his efforts to uphold the decorum of the House. The statement he made today is both timely and fair to both sides of the House.

If it takes a headmasters approach to bring some of these MP’s to order then Speaker Horton is the right man for the job regardless of political affiliations. Go to it Mr. Speaker. Most of us are on your team.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Maybe he should bring his old cane to the House & place it right next to the gavel to be handy.

  18. Ruthless says:

The fact that he needed to tell Politicians why they were elected and who is watching them makes me shake my damn head!!! Just shows why some are into politics and it surely isn’t to help us.

  19. joank says:

It’s about time he took charge. This has been allowed to go on for far too long. A difficult position for him but its his job. Kick them out and fine them if necessary. BERMUDA will suffer greatly if our representatives continue acting in such childish, disgusting ways. YES the World is watching and listening!

  20. PANGAEA says:

I AM ON HERE, BECAUSE, I CARE ABOUT PEOPLE AND EVERY THING IN BETWEEN.

  21. Takbir Karriem Sharrieff says:

Good flogging that we all deserve in Bermuda…….congratulations Mr.Speaker….

  22. PANGAEA says:

I worked in Government for 17 years, where I was expected to do a “proper job”.

Consequently ,I expect our politicians to do the same and set an example.

You are payed big money to do a “proper job” for which I expect nothing less.

You have a job to do, So ! Get on with it.

  23. Unus sed leo says:

    We COMMAND you behayahself!
