PLP Thanks Airport Town Hall Meeting Attendees
The Progressive Labour Party said they would like to “thank the nearly one hundred residents who attended our Town Hall Meeting at Purvis Primary on Tuesday, January 27, to learn about the One Bermuda Alliance’s plans to privatise the LF Wade International Airport.”
The meeting, moderated by Lt. Col. David Burch, lasted for 90 minutes and featured presentations by Shadow Minster of Finance David Burt and Shadow Minister of Transport Lawrence Scott.
Shadow Minister of Finance David Burt stated, “It was gratifying to see the large turnout in Warwick as it shows that Bermudians want to learn about the OBA plans to privatise the airport.
“With the current financial challenges being experienced by the Government now is not the time to give away one of the few government departments that make money. This is a bad deal for Bermuda and will not benefit the country in the long run.”
Shadow Transport Minister Lawrence Scott added, “We will continue to educate and inform the public about these plans that the OBA has to privatise and we will strive to ensure that our Bermudian interests are protected. The OBA should not be allowed to marginalise Bermudians and allow foreign interests to prevail.”

Unless you’re hosting a house party, 100 people is not a good turn out!
Public Private Partnerships, commonly referred to as “P3′s” are relatively common. And the fact is, they are almost always bad for the public side of the partnerships. A quick Google will provide all the evidence anyone could possibly want.
Having said that, if entering into a P3 with respect to the Airport is bad, why wasn’t it a bad idea when the previous government decided to do the same thing with the hospital? Was it because the PLP was the party making the deal?
BTW, just so everyone understands the “benefits” of a P3 – one of the biggest is that the cost does not appear on the government’s balance sheet. In the case of the hospital, that means that Bermuda did not have to borrow the roughly $350 million cost of the new wing. I’m sure Enron, or any of the financial engineers out there, would have been proud of Paula because she figured out how to borrow $350 million without it showing up as debt.
That doesn’t excuse the OBA on this one, but you do have to put things in proportion. How exactly does the OBA deal re the airport differ from the PLP deal re KEMH???
i just love the math
its plain to see where 1 1/2 billion went in 14 years
all you hear is 1 billion , 1 billion 1 billion but the truth is written you have to look for it yes 4.6 million surplus x 30 years
I am so glad they don’t do my books
I do however still believe in following tendering rules.
Only 100 people,case closed.
Those are the people that voted for Col. Burch. “We don’t care what you think”
A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
It may sound trite, but using the weapons of the enemy, no matter how good one’s intentions, makes one the enemy. -Charles de Lint, writer and folk musician (b. 1951)
