School Counsellors Celebrate Counselling Week

National School Counselling Week will be celebrated from Feb. 2–6 to focus public attention on the unique contribution of Bermuda Public School System [BPSS] counsellors and the difference they make in their students’ educational journey.

“In recognition of the 20th anniversary of the Bermuda Counsellors Association [BCA] there is a special spotlight this week on those who have served for 20 years or more,” a spokesperson said.

“They are Marian Askia – East End Primary and St. David’s Pre-school; Barbara Hollis – Northlands Primary; Marita Martinez – Heron Bay Primary and Port Royal Primary; Anthony Peets – Prospect Primary and Prospect Pre-school; Donnamae Postlethwaite – Dalton E. Tucker Primary and Devonshire Pre-school; Winifred Simmons – Cedarbridge Academy; and, Arleen Swan – The Berkeley Institute.”

BPSS Education Officer, Counselling, LeeAnn Simmons stated: “Bermuda’s public school counsellors implement comprehensive school counselling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century. They are truly appreciated for their dedication and professionalism.”

Bermuda’s public school counsellors are actively engaged in:

• helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents;
• working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world;
• focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ social/personal, educational and career development; and
• working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves.

Bermuda’s public school counsellors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in guidance and counselling, or a related field. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.

National School Counselling Week originated as a programme sponsored by the American School Counselor Association [ASCA], highlighting the tremendous impact school counsellors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

Ms Simmons said Bermuda has followed the lead of ASCA and has acknowledged National School Counselling Week in various ways over the past nine years.
