Premier To Attend Overseas Territories Meeting

November 17, 2015

The Cabinet Office advised today that Premier Michael Dunkley will be travelling to the UK at the end of this month to participate in the Overseas Territories Joint Ministerial Council Meetings [OT JMC].

“The OT JMC takes place from Nov. 30 – Dec. 3 and the Premier will be joined by other OT leaders as well as Cabinet Ministers and senior Civil Servants from Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Turks and Caicos Islands, Ascension Island, Tristan Da Cunha, St Helena and Pitcairn,” a spokesperson said.

“The public will recall that this past July, Premier Dunkley hosted several of the OT leaders at the pre-JMC meeting – the second time Bermuda has hosted such a meeting.

“The public will be aware that the Pre-JMC Meetings are a precursor for the Overseas Territories Joint Ministerial Council meeting which is hosted by the UK Government in London.

The OT leaders speaking with the media at the pre-JMC meeting in July:

“It is anticipated that there will be a lengthy agenda for the upcoming OT JMC with issues such as economic diversification and development, regional border security, global standards of financial regulation accountability and transparency and environmental sustainability being discussed.

At the conclusion of July’s pre-JMC meeting Premier Dunkley said, “We had a very productive series of meetings where some very critical issues were discussed. Each territory has some concerns that are very unique to their specific countries.

“The common thread during our two days of talks is that if we are to make any progress in at the JMC Meetings in London, then we must present a unified front in order to achieve a beneficial outcome for all our countries.

“I was encouraged by the input and support from all the Overseas Territories Leaders in attendance and I look forward to seeing them again at the JMC,” the Premier added.

“The Cabinet Office also advised that as has been the tradition, while in London the Premier alongside the Government of Bermuda London Office will host a networking reception for Bermudians living, working and studying at the University level in the UK,” a spokesperson said.

“The reception will be held on the evening of November 30th. Individuals with an interest to attend should contact the Government of Bermuda London office at Londonoffice@gov.bm or by calling [0] 20 7518 9900 to receive an invitation and RSVP.

“The JMC process is under the remit of the London Office and works in cohesion with Overseas Territory representative offices based in the UK to ensure Bermuda’s overall interests are upheld.”
