Glaze Continue Expansion, To Open 4th Location

April 4, 2016

Glaze will be opening up its fourth location as it moves into the eatery space at the Dockyard Pharmacy as it continues its rapid expansion.

Just two weeks ago Glaze opened its third location, this one at Brown & Co in the spot formerly operated by Buzz.

Owner Marico Thomas said the chain is not done growing this year with two more stores slated to open in Somerset and Devonshire and a possible seventh shop for St. George’s if the right spot can be found.

Glaze also operates stores on Bermudiana Road and Church Street in Hamilton.

Mr. Thomas, who also owns the Four Star Pizza chain, said he expects to hire 75 to 100 people for the Glaze franchise over the course of the year.

The Bermudiana location offered donuts, coffee and cake and some people refer to the Glaze franchise as a donut shop, but Mr. Thomas said it is much more than that. He said when he opened the Bermudiana Road store it was never his intention to just operate one shop because the economies of scale were too small.

As part of that, he was listening to the people who were coming in to the store.

Mr Thomas said, “Our customers were asking more of us for their wider needs. So with the Church Street location we decided to offer more.”

That location started selling fresh bread and a wider variety of pastries. The expansion of the menu continued with the Brown & Co store.

“We have sandwiches, soups, salads, paninis and a hot buffet, smoothies and milkshakes as well as pastries and donuts,” he said.

The Dockyard Pharmacy location should open within the next two weeks but it could be ready by the April 8th weekend.

Mr. Thomas said the Somerset Glaze should be open by the end of June with the Devonshire store, located where the old Howard’s grocery store used to be, should open sometime this summer.

The Devonshire Glaze restaurant will be unique for Bermuda as it will have a drive-thru window for people to pick up the orders on the go without leaving their vehicles.

“People will be able to eat in or drive thru. We will be offering the same sort of experience that you would get in North America. You will order, move forward and pick up your order at the window. It will be packaged tightly and correctly and you can be on your way without any meaningful wait.”

He said in order to make that happen efficiently, the drive-thru menu will not be as expansive as a customer would get if they decided to eat inside the Devonshire Glaze restaurant.

“The restaurant will be able to accommodate 30 to 40 people,” Mr. Thomas.

He said many residents have travelled overseas and eaten in a fast food, fast casual types of restaurants and will expect a high-level of efficient professional service.

“We want them to get the type of service they would expect to get in North America so we need to have the operational system in place that will allow our local labour force to execute it.”

  3. charity says:

    Awesome for Bermuda!

  4. Hmm says:

Would love to see the Maple Donuts without the bacon added as a daily option. Hopefully larger venues permit it. Awesome product and good customer service has been my experience there.

  5. Turtle says:

Excellent!!!! Congratulation !!!! For sugar for a growing diabetis population in Bermuda!!!!! Getting bigger and bigger!!!!

    • Rhonda says:

true…its surprising that amongst all the craze around organic/natural/raw/vege/etc etc diets that a ‘treats galore’ shop is expanding so rapidly. I was expecting to see a strictly vegetarian or vegan restaurant to open by now….bummer :-(

  6. Let's get fat says:

Great news for the health-conscious! SEVEN donut eateries on one small island, that says a lot if the market’s there! And hey, why not sit in your car when ordering, so you don’t even have to move a muscle when ordering your deep fried heart attack in a box!

    • Ms. Poli Tician says:

The simple response is not to patronize the establishment if you are health-conscious. But, many people’s idea of health-conscious is to order a Diet Coke, instead of regular, with their french fries :-(

    • Foodie says:

They actually offer health conscious items. I have gotten salads at Brown & Co and love them. It’s really more than a donut shop now, but everyone makes their own choice as what they put in their month.

      • Legalgal says:

But no sushi or smoothies. So sad. Buzz is a real loss. And the coffee is dreadful. Would kill for a trailer trash Krispy Kreme though!

  7. Bonkers says:

I am way too excited about a drive thru

  8. Good Grief says:

As long as Bermudians are hired with a livable wage, then may they prosper. If not, we should treat the same as buzz!

    • wahoo says:

That would drive up de price of de donuts man, your argument has hole in it (like a donut).

  9. Lioness on the rise says:

Congrats, it would be nice to have vegan products to purchase .

    • Rhonda says:

would you rely by something ‘vegan’ that is sitting right beside something non-vegan…the vegan diet is quite strict, no exceptions and if so, it ain’t vegan ;-)

  10. Mike says:

i paid $5 for a donut… one donut.. just chop my leg off now…

  11. Um.... says:

    The new Buzz….

    • Legalgal says:

Less the real coffee/cappuccinos sadly. And smoothies. And sushi, and….

  12. lifetime says:

And we wonder why so many people end up with diabetes and are morbidly obese on this island. Make smart decisions folks.

All the best to Mr. Thomas

  13. HISTORY says:

LET US SEE HOW MANY LOCALS ARE EMPLOYED THERE AND ALL THE OTHER STORES.

    WHAR PERCENTAGE BOSSMAN THOMO

    ARE BERMUDIANS TOO EXPENSIVE ?

    • drunken ursula says:

well History , I’m always in Glaze shop at Washington Mall the local girls are wonderful as are the other employees, can’t find any fault with Mr. Thomas at all . My advise Mr. Thomas , please don’t become like Buzz please!

  14. SMFH says:

So we can’t have American franchises and the reason given was we don’t want to look like the United States (absurd belief) but we can create our own franchises to imitate theirs. Seems legit. Time to get rid of that law.

  15. Rhonda says:

the johnnybread sausage things have got to go…everything else perfect!

  16. FAN says:

one should be 24hr! that would be awesome especially for all the late/early workers!!
