Court: Man Charged With Assaulting Police
Appearing in Magistrates Court today, a 52-year-old man was charged in relation to allegedly assaulting the police during the protest on Friday.
Edmund Smith was charged with assaulting a police officer and causing him bodily harm, and with possessing a wooden walking staff.
When charged, Mr Smith asked Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo how do you respond when someone sprays you with pepper spray, and also said he intends to “bring down this colonial system” as it is discriminatory.
Magistrate Tokunbo entered Mr Smith’s responses as a plea of not guilty.
The Magistrate then noted that Mr Smith had failed to attend a Court hearing previously on a different matter, which Mr Smith denied.
Noting Mr Smith’s objections, the Magistrate ordered he be held in custody until he re-appears later this month, and also ordered that Mr Smith undergo a psychological evaluation to see if he was fit to stand trial.
