Power Of One Student Assembly At TN Tatem
Earlier today [Jan 24], the Minster of Public Works Lt. Col. David Burch addressed students at a special assembly at TN Tatem Middle School for the Power of One Student Council pinning ceremony.
Minister Burch offered some words of encouragement to the young people who were appointed as members of the Senior Power of One Leadership Team.
Power of One is headed by former local and international footballer David Bascome, and is a programme aimed at empowering and teaching leadership skills to Bermuda’s young people.

Speaking to the students, Minister Burch said, “I note that you are students who will be appointed as members of the Senior Power of One Leadership Team. To serve as representatives of excellent leadership at middle school level that will hold you in good stead as you develop into adulthood. As such I am certain you will also develop into top scholars academically, social leaders and as positive role models for your peers.
“I am excited by the impact your new principal, Mrs. Coddington has had since she arrived here in September – raising the bar and participation of students, faculty and parents. As the Middle School in my constituency – I take a keen personal interest in your progress and am available to assist where I can.
“Of course as the Minister of Public Works – I am your landlord – so I am also delighted that we will shortly commence work on bringing the building at the entrance to the school back into service and I know the T. N. Tatem leadership team have some exciting plans for its use.
“I always ask young people and some not so young – what do you like to do? That is the key to a fulfilling life – there is no need to decide that now but think about it.
“As an example – do any of you think that Mr. David Bascome is not doing something that he loves? You can tell by his energy, enthusiasm and excitement. Once you find your passion – then it is a pleasant journey. I note that you have physically transformed the look of the school with inspirational messages on the ceiling tiles outside this auditorium – let them continue to inspire you and propel you on your journey.
“It is our job – the adult villagers – to ensure that you have every opportunity to reach your full potential – the staff of this institution and many in this community are committed to doing just that – making sure that you know – you can be and do anything you set your minds to – if you work hard enough and are committed and focused enough to try.
“So let me thank you again for inviting me to participate in this Power Student Council pinning ceremony – this is the start of your leadership journey to one day sitting at the Cabinet table or being the Premier of this country – you are laying the foundation now for whatever you decide to do in your life.
“Don’t let anyone tell you – you can’t – take full advantage of all the opportunities offered to you and have some fun along the way. I know that you can achieve great things – so like Nike says – “Just do it!”
