Police Statement On Cannonier/Watson Matter

July 20, 2021

The police have confirmed that Sophia Cannonier and Michael Watson are “within their residence which is being supervised by BPS officers.”

In a statement this afternoon [July 20], a police spokesperson said, “Following a breach this morning at the Cannonier Watson residence, the Bermuda Police Service [BPS] can now confirm that the family are within their residence which is being supervised by BPS officers. As a result of the offences committed today, a further file is being prepared with an anticipated court appearance.”

Earlier today, the Bermuda Freedom Alliance group posted a social media appeal for people to show up at their house.

Live video replay from outside the Cannonier Watson house:

The BBC/ZBM previously reported that, “Appearing in court via Zoom last week, Sophia Cannonier and Michael Watson denied breaching Covid-19 quarantine rules. The case was adjourned until August 16, and senior magistrate Juan Wolffe released the couple on $3,000 bail each.

“He also instructed the family to remain at their residence until receiving a negative Day 8 Covid test. Public health regulations for unvaccinated travelers require them to quarantine for 14 days, so we sought clarification on the apparent contradiction.”

The BBC noted they received the following response from the Ministry of Health, which said: “Sophia Cannonier and Michael Watson are required to quarantine for 14 days. We cannot comment on the court ruling which relates to the bail conditions, however the law is clear and they must quarantine for 14 days.”

  1. Jokers says:

Now the Police have joined the circus.

  2. Wow! says:

This is crazy. The person who started one of the waves was never even charged but now we are putting people outside the doors of rule breakers.

Look if they don’t want to follow the rules, throw them in jail but stop wasting my hard earned tax paying dollars and let the police go back to finding murders, working to keep our streets safe, building community relations, helping domestic violence victims ……… but please no more money on these two!

The poor kids, why would any parent do this to their children.
I was kind of feeling sorry for them till I watched that, she thinks it is a party!!!!!

      Huh

    • Pat-Rice says:

      My dear,
Your few taxpayer’s money was spent by gov. to the already rich hoteliers and crew to lock our healthy, Covid free returning students and family in cruel solitary confinement when they should be home. (UNLESS TRAVELLING FROM A RISKY PLACE)

I have lost all respect for this bunch, especially Eugene, I always thought he was a smart young man but now he has proved me wrong.
The law is the law and when you decide that you’re above that law, don’t complain when you have to suffer the consequences. They spoke of breaking the law before they even left the island.
You get no sympathy from me.

  4. The Senior Magistrate must address this matter immediately and the department of health has to take this issue up with the courts and not the Cannonier/Watson Family. If any new charges has arisen as a result of today, those charges will have to go before the Senior Magistrate and must be thrown out immediately based on his previous ruling.

So the actions of the department of health today is a waste of time as the issue is above the Cannonier/Watson family and should have been resolved long before now, The ruling was last week Thursday Morning, the health department had all day Friday to resolve this matter with the Senior Magistrate, and to show up at the couples door on Sunday is another attempt of aggression, and the health department still had all day yesterday to resolve it again with the Senior Magistrate.

Yet today decide to press further charges because they left their premises based on the Senior Magistrates ruling, a waste of policing when the police have far greater issues to deal with, and a waste of tax payers money in costing our tax payers more in court trials that are going to be thrown out, you can’t make this stuff up, do we have nursery school children running our government.

  5. Paul says:

Who the hell is running this Island? the SENIOR MAGISTRATE SAYS ONE THING ,AND THE HEALTH DEPT SAYS another …. Bermuda wake up…time to get rid of the present Gov….enough is enough.thank you Eugene Dean, for your calm reporting

    • JAWS says:

If Eugene and Sofia was running this country COVID cases would be sky high.

  6. Platinum says:

Who is paying for their residence to be supervised by BPS officers? They didn’t want to pay for the hotel so please have them, not the tax payer, pay for the BPS supervision.

    • Pat-Rice says:

They should you pay for your ignorance since you have so much mouth!

    • Bermudian says:

I find this family’s behavior astonishing. They set up funding websites to ask folks to contribute to their children’s education, yet seem willing to risk massive fines for breaching Covid rules. They either don’t need the money or else will be setting up a campaign soon to pay for their legal costs and fines..

  7. Whsu says:

Uh huh…that coercion to “take the mRNA jab” or “several thousand dollars” was and is ridiculous and insulting. It’s bad enough, to have to 2wk quarantine, but to have to pay as a coercive tool, is unbelievable. Free will over force/ Good over evil. 10 toes down.

  8. Ringmaster says:

It is said the law is the law. Clearly not in Bermuda if you can get social media behind you. Ignore the law, walk out of the airport and you are untouchable. The Government and BPS have been shown up as incompetent idiots, costing the taxpayer and law abiding people money. I guess supervised quarantine has a new meaning.

  9. crowmwell says:

it is not an easy path for the PLzp Government to defeat the Voved 19 virus and its mutant offspring but the divisions within the Party do not help the Premier fight this Pandemic. zwe need those who disagree with the Premiers policy and economic recovery plan to try and find ways to work with him in the best interests of the country until the pandemic goes away.

  10. SeeU says:

This government is a bunch of evil people and they will be remembered with pure disgust!! I count the days until they’re gone forever!! All of them!! People hate you plp!!

  11. Imjustsaying says:

It’s bail conditions. Not quarantine conditions. Two separate things. He didn’t say “I’m changing your quarantine conditions” He just set bail condition. That is what it seems and it doesn’t make any sense because who has a bail condition that requires them to stay in their residence?

  12. Cleaver says:

This is my question if a Law if put in place and signed off How can a magistrate overrule that law? Seems to me the magistrate is causing a whole bunch of confusion

  13. Dumbfounded says:

If you follow a judge’s ruling, how are you breakinh the law? That is what court is for

  14. Parent says:

She says in the video that she went to her business and interacted with kids???? What is going on here? Kids need protection so Covid doesn’t get into the schools or camps again.

  15. ROGER LAAMBERT says:

If the only reason for the quarantiner leaving the home is to get tested, let that stop & have a traveling tester. They pay for the tester too as all pay for the delivery & pickup services like, Dropit, taxis & etc. who have had 16 months of practice so should be 110+% QUALITY.
