STIs Decrease Amid Curfews & Stay At Home

February 24, 2022

Reported sexually transmitted infections [STIs] decreased by 39% in 2020, with the decrease attributed to factors including the “stay-at-home orders and curfews that were in place.”

The first curfew was instituted in March 2020, and in April 2020 a State of Emergency was declared and the ‘Shelter In Place’ order was in effect, restricting people from leaving their house unless they were traveling for specific reasons such as to get food, medicine or gas, or to attend essential jobs.

These statistics are according to the Bermuda Digest of Statistics, which said, “The number of reported sexually transmitted infections [STIs] decreased by 39% year-to-year, reflective of Covid-19 stay-at-home orders and curfews that were in place as well as possible changes in behavior to minimize the spread of Covid-19.

“Half of all STIs were reported by persons aged 20 to 29 years and 72% of all patients were females. Chlamydia has consistently been the most common STI; this year it accounted for 76% of all cases.”
