Two Incidents, Three People Arrested
A 19-year-old male in possession of a knife was arrested on Saturday, and later that day two people were arrested following a disturbance at the National Sports Center.
19 Year Old Arrested
A police spokesperson said, “Around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, 26th February, 2022, police stopped a nineteen-year-old male for traffic related offences. Subsequent inquires revealed the subject had a number of outstanding warrants.
“When informed, he attempted to run off, but was apprehended after a short chase
“Officers searched the man and recovered a three-inch bladed knife. He was arrested and conveyed to the Hamilton Police Station.
Two Arrested After Disturbance At The National Sports Center
“At approximately 3:20 p.m., also on Saturday’s date, police received a report of a disturbance at the National Sports Center.
“Officers attended and upon arrival, were directed to a fifteen-year-old male, who was found to be in possession of a bladed weapon. He was arrested and taken to the Hamilton Police Station. He has since been released on bail.
“A second suspect also in possession of a bladed weapon managed to avoid arrest, as he left the area prior to police arrival. However, he also was later arrested and released on bail pending further investigations.
“One of the boys received minor injuries as a result of the disturbance
“A courageous and vigilant member of the public was able to retrieve a knife from one of the fifteen-year-old-males in an effort to avoid further harm.
“Antoine Daniels, Assistant Commissioner of Police thanked those members of the public who intervened to help prevent more serious injury occurring. Mr. Daniels remained on the scene and spoke with a number of young people who indicated, the carrying of knives and other bladed articles is fast becoming the norm, as individuals seek to exact revenge or, protect themselves from being attacked.
Assistant Commissioner’s Comments
The Assistant Commissioner said, “This is not the first time that the Bermuda Police Service has been informed about this type of behaviour. In fact, Acting Commissioner Mr. Darrin Simons, highlighted this very situation during a recent press conference to address knife crime on the island.
“I not only wish to reiterate the Acting Commissioner’s comments that carrying a knife or any bladed object for protection creates a greater likelihood of becoming involved in a knife related incident, but additionally increases the risk of the people around you being injured.
33 Incidents Involving Bladed Articles Since August 2021
“Since 1 August 2021, the BPS have recorded in excess of thirty [33] incidents involving bladed articles, which is a worrying trend for a small island community.
Mr. Daniels noted, “In the space of twelve hours this past Saturday, our officers were called upon to deal with two knife related incidents. One of them at a sporting event attended by a large cross section of the community, old and young alike. A third such incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, resulted in a female being left with a knife wound to her back.
“While we are thankful that the injury was not life-threatening, it’s not lost on us that another family could have been left to face a tragedy as there is real potential for loss of life stemming from each of these senseless acts. A young life is derailed, a family traumatised and a community damaged.
Police Have Power To Stop And Search Individuals.
“I wish to remind the public that under section 315F of the Criminal Code, police officers have the power to stop and search individuals. We will be increasing our efforts in that regard as we seek to bring an end to the practice of individuals going out in public armed and ready to engage in violence.”
“Anyone with information on the incidents above, is asked to call 211, the main police number, 295-0011, the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers number, 800-8477 or, provide the information to a police officer with whom you are familiar.”
If getting caught with the knife is the same punishment as peeing in public, then what do expect lol.if there is no reason to stop then why should they. The joke is if those same kids had a oz of weed on them, then they go juve. So in bermuda your better off stabbing someone than selling drugs smh
If only we had severe deterrent like a bladed article law , one with something like a mandatory sentence of 7 years , then maybe we wouldn’t see this behavior.
OH , well maybe if we had started issuing out the sentence back when it was made law to offenders this would maybe never have gotten to this point .
Wonder why I’ve never seen someone sentenced to the max , or not even anywhere near to it ? Usually just a measly fine.
