Birdsey Retrospective At Masterworks Museum
Between September 2022 and April 2023, the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art will hold the first significant Retrospective of Alfred Birdsey, featuring oil paintings, drawings, block prints, and watercolours.
A spokesperson said, “Between September 2022 and April 2023, the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art will hold the first significant Retrospective of Alfred Birdsey.
“Although principally featuring oil paintings, the exhibition will also include drawings, block prints, and watercolours that Birdsey created during his long and prolific career of more than half a century. Born in England, he became one of Bermuda’s first modernist painters and helped redefine the island with abstract oils and watercolours.
“The retrospective will be a collaboration between the Masterworks Permanent Collection and private local collectors – bringing forward a collective memory of the island as captured by the artist. Masterworks invites the public to share Birdsey’s from their personal collections and any accompanying stories they have of the artist and his works, for the exhibition.”
Executive Director Risa Hunter explained, “This Birdsey exhibition is particularly compelling not only as a spotlight on a well-known Bermuda artist but in its ability to highlight his widespread appeal by uncovering personal narratives of those who have lived with and loved his works. Sharing these stories as part of this exhibition places not just Birdsey, but Bermuda art, as a focal point for better understanding the fabric of our diverse community.”
Working alongside the Masterworks team is guest curator Carole Reed, a digital nomad who brings over twenty years of experience, notably working with Vernacular and Self-Taught Art [like the works of Birdsey], who noted, “I am excited to be joining the Masterworks team in bringing this compelling retrospective to life. Living on the island now for almost two years, I feel a deep and abiding connection to my new home here in Bermuda and being able to work on this project that truly celebrates the island community, only solidifies this connection.”
If you, or someone you know, would be interested in sharing your artwork, you can head to www.masterworksbermuda.org/birdsey or email birdseybda@gmail.com to submit your information.
The Alfred Birdsey exhibition, Stories & Sentiments, will open in September and run until April 2023.

Hi Carol — I live in Texas and came across a Birdsey lithograph, or so it seems. Any chance of me sending you a photo to get your opinion?
