BTA: ‘Global Search For The Role Of CEO’

February 2, 2023

The Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] Board “has made the decision to do a global search for the role of CEO,”  BTA Board Chairman Wayne Caines said.

An advertisement for the position online states, “Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO has overall responsibility for leading the BTA by managing a sound, flexible, efficient, cost-effective, and ultimately profitable organization. As CEO, you are ultimately accountable for the development of sustained value creation for industry and community stakeholders.”

In response to questions, Mr Caines said, “In keeping with best practice, the board has made the decision to do a global search for the role of CEO. Tracy Berkeley will continue as interim CEO of the BTA.”

Cut the salaries of the BTA staff by 25%, bring back Bill Hanbury, and double Hanbury’s salary.

  2. Joe Bloggs says:

Clearly Tracy Berkeley is not the person the Minister wants, otherwise there would be no need for a “global search”.

It is a shame that the Minister will not allow any of the 4 Bermudians appointed since the departure of Bill Hanbury to succeed.

  3. Ringmaster says:

Here is the ultimate poisoned chalice. No one of the experience needed is likely to apply once they have done a few minutes due diligence. So sad as a properly functioning entity, independent of Government mis-management is needed. Also missing is a product to sell because Bermuda has totally lost its reason to be a destination that stands out as somewhere different, in the best way.

  4. Guy Carri says:

The only reasons a truly fitting person would apply is:
    - they will be overpaid in their opinion
    - they didn’t do any research on the plentiful past heads, their associated timelines and departing messages (or lack thereof)

  5. question says:

We will never again be able to get someone of the quality of Bill Hanbury or Kevin Dallas.

    • sandgrownan says:

Correct. Who can ever forget the hate Hanbury faced from the PLP when in opposition. Disgraceful and embarrassing.

  6. Sad says:

Bermudians first is the Government mantra. Caines should resign and it is most unfortunate that the PLP double talk and regularly ties their shoe laces as they walk. No confidence in its own people. Clear as daylight.

  7. Reflections of? says:

Why do we even need a BTA head? SHP closed, Grand Atlantic going condo, Elbow Beach Closed. Hamilton Princess and St Regis should have no problem being at 100% occupancy with no competition. Why bring someone else in? If they are able to increase flights and introduce a powerful new marketing campaign, where are the gonna stay?

    • Joe Bloggs says:

If we did not have a BTA the budget would be allocated directly to the Minister of Tourism. Would you prefer that?

    • Smart deduction says:

Never thought of that. Brilliant. Lots of places are closed so drumming up support is a waste of money

  8. aceboy says:

Whomever they choose they must be black and focus on black only Tourism. It’s a tried and true recipe for success!

    • Double s says:

Don’t forget about faith based and medical tourism!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Sad statement but true. Ethnic tourism does not work. Nobody cares about cultural tourism.

  9. Triangle Drifter says:

There will not be another CEO of the quality that Bill Hanbury or Kevin Dallas.

Anyone of that level will do their due diligence on Bermuda, it’s tourism history, it’s attitude towards tourism, unions, political interference in the BTA & decide that they will not want their name associated with anything Bermuda linked to their careers.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

That commentary is a sad reflection on Bermuda, but true.
