Teachers Rugby Football Club have been crowned league and cup champions after defeating Police 54-22 in the Nichol Shield at the North Field, National Sports Centre, on Saturday [April 8].
Teachers, who had already wrapped up the Bermuda Rugby Football Union [BRFU] league title after finishing the campaign undefeated, retained the Nichol Shield, the oldest continuous sporting competition in Bermuda.
Four tries from Hadleigh Tucker and two from Khabir Dill did the damage for Teachers, with Niko Francis and captain Jakee Simons also notching tries. Kwame Naylor converted seven of his eight conversion attempts.
Chris Naylor, the Teachers coach, said he was proud of his side’s energetic and ruthless display against a hardworking Police outfit.
“Police made us work hard in the first half, but it was a pretty convincing victory,” Naylor told Bernews. “The scoreline perhaps flattered us a little bit, but did probably reflect our superior fitness. It was a real team effort.”
Naylor said the youthful nature of his side bodes well for the future.
“We’ve got a very young side this year – a lot of 16, 17 and 18-year-olds,” he said.
“We have more firepower than the other clubs thanks to our speedy youngsters. It was our first league and cup double since about 2004.”
In the women’s Scully Cup, Police Ladies, the league champions, beat Teachers Ladies 19-0.
Naylor added: “The Teachers Ladies side have made great strides and improved massively. They’re really keen, and the whole club is riding on a high.”
