Historical Video: Bermuda Gombeys In 1934
As the island prepares to celebrate Bermuda Day tomorrow, this rare footage from almost 100 years ago offers a unique glimpse into the enduring spirit of the Gombeys, who have long served as the heartbeat of Bermuda’s artistic and cultural connections.
The black-and-white video — filmed in 1934 – shows a look at a bygone era and provides a visual time capsule of the island’s cultural heritage, with the Gombey tradition having stood for centuries. The island’s iconic Gombeys are expected to take part in tomorrow’s parade, having been a longstanding and popular part of the parade.
The video, originally captured in black and white, is also posted below digitally enhanced with color, and while the colorized version is likely not be an exact representation of the original colors, as it was done in-house by Bernews and we just did the best we could envision, it provides another view of this historical footage.

Thank you to the owner for capturing and preserving this historic piece of history and those who colourised it. Beautiful work!
The really amazing part is that it was shot with a ‘Sound on Film’16mm camera that captured the actual audio optically as it was filmed. You can hear the sound blips when the shots change. Very rare for 1934. An absolute historical treasure.
Awesome. Thank you to all involved in preserving that bit of our history.
