Kenni Thompson On Football, Spain & More
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Kenni Thompson believes her experience of top-flight football in Spain will help Eibar adjust swiftly to life back in Liga F.
Thompson has signed a new one-year contract after impressing in the Basque Country club’s promotion-winning campaign last season, finishing runners-up in the second division.
The 22-year-old has plenty of top-level know-how at Espanyol, Deportivo de La Coruña and Santa Teresa; she also spent a campaign at London City Lionesses in the FA Women’s Championship, the second tier in England.
“My top-flight experience was mentioned by the coach and sporting director when Eibar signed me last summer,” Thompson told Bernews. “They hoped I could help the club gain promotion.
“Playing in the top division will be challenging, but we look forward to it.
“Of course, the main objective is to stay up, but we hope to compete, do as well as we can, and not just fight for survival.”
Thompson, who returned to Spain last week for pre-season training, was deployed as a left-wing back last term and said she enjoyed getting to grips with a different position.
“I hadn’t played wing-back in a while, and it took a bit of adjusting to,” said Thompson, the daughter of Kenny Thompson, the North Village and former Bermuda coach. “The team and the coaching staff helped me through it.
“I’m the type of player who will play wherever needed. I’m comfortable in lots of positions. If I’m needed somewhere else, I’ll play there.”
Thompson, who considers Spain her “second home”, said she harbours ambitions of playing in the Women’s Champions League and competing internationally.
“Every step in my career has been a learning experience, whether good or bad,” she said. “I know how to push through and figure things out.
“I want to play at the top level, but know I must be patient and take things game by game. I need to use each game to work towards those end goals.”
Although she is yet to play for Bermuda, Thompson was approached by Bermuda coach Naquita Robinson before the Concacaf W Qualifiers last year and has not ruled out representing the island in the future.
“I potentially have a couple of options,” she added. “Bermuda is my home, and it would be great to represent my country. I’m never going to rule that out. Let’s see what the future holds.”
