New Electric Paddleboard Venture Launching

A new electric paddleboard rental venture is preparing to launch in Bermuda after months of testing in Mangrove Bay.

Sea Venture Electric Watercrafts is the brainchild of Bermudian entrepreneur Patrick Fishel, who divides his time between Bermuda and San Diego.

The operation will offer electric paddleboards designed to assist riders with onboard motor power when needed.

Mr Fishel, who hails from St David’s, said the idea developed after he returned to Bermuda for Cup Match in 2023 and spent time exploring the island’s waters on an electric paddleboard.

“After taking the board to places like Cooper’s Island and Harrington Sound, I thought it was a good fit for Bermuda,” Mr Fishel told Bernews.

“It was very different from what I’d previously done in Bermuda — the jet skis and the Boston Whalers.

“It was a more intimate experience. You get a lot closer to the shoreline.”

Mr Fishel, whose daughter Mia Fishel plays football for the United States, said the technology can help when conditions become more challenging, such as shifting tides and changing winds, by using the board’s motor system to return to shore.

The paddleboards are powered by two lithium batteries housed in a sealed waterproof compartment. A full charge takes about two hours and provides up to six hours of use.

Users can select from three speed settings — 2mph, 3mph and 4mph — using controls built into the paddle.

Designed to operate in shallow waters, the boards have a draft of roughly six inches and can support riders weighing up to about 275 pounds.

Mr Fishel described the boards as a quiet and environmentally friendly way to explore the coastline, noting they do not require fuel or produce exhaust emissions.

“The board doesn’t emit a lot of sound,” he said. “You’re not spooking the marine life.

“You don’t need the assist unless you need to. You can use it like a normal paddleboard — it just gives you an electric assist.

“You don’t have to think about how far you’re going, or if the wind or tide switches.”

The equipment is manufactured by Slovenia-based SipaBoards, which developed the integrated electric propulsion system.

The business has spent the past several months testing the boards at its King’s Point location and is targeting a full launch by the middle of next month.

Mr Fishel said he has also spent time helping to clear broken glass and plastic from the nearby beach while testing the boards.

Rentals will be available to people aged 15 and older. The cost is $75 for a 90-minute session, with one board assigned per rider.
