“I had a few good performances on the PGA European Tour in Dutch Open, Jersey Open and the Timex Open in Biarritz, with a notable low round three in the 1981 Dutch Open tying Ray Floyd and Sam Torrance to feature among the leaders going into the final round.

“To have defeated Ken Green, my former collegiate team leader and inspiration – who previously was among the best amateurs in the USA – was a major achievement on its own for me. Ken Green would go on to win five times on the PGA Tour and compete in the Ryder Cup.”

The spokesperson said, “The qualifying tournament for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship ironically falls at the time the now defunct Bermuda Open was held.”

Mr. Swan said, “It’s a shame Bermuda no longer has a Bermuda Open Championship to identify our national champion, but this is the closest thing we have.

“History matters and I owe my life to winning our National Championship at ages 20, 26 and 27, but feel blessed to be enjoying increased fitness at age 66 and still feel the competitive juices flowing.

“My journey continues in golf at age 66 as I aim to realize my true potential at this stage of my life. I’ve already overcome an eating disorder that had made me obese and feel thankful to be able to rekindle golf form at this late stage of my life and relive some of what was developed through a lifetime of hard work, training, and dedication.”
