Imagine Bermuda Supports UNESCO’s Initiative

November 6, 2023 | 1 Comment

Imagine Bermuda is in the process of canvassing our community, engaging individuals and organizations regarding an initiative that UNESCO launched last week, in the briefing that their Executive Director conducted with the United Nations Security Council.

A spokesperson said, “Out of their grave concern for the Children – regardless of religion or ethnicity – UNESCO has called for urgent action on the part of the Global Community, given the ongoing siege on Gaza.

“As a result of this canvassing, local personalities and groups are currently engaged in collaborating in producing a Joint Statement, speaking to the urgent concerns raised by UNESCO. This document will be released at a lunchtime Gathering – What About the Children – at City Hall steps [Appropriately a part of Freedom Square] on Wednesday – 8/11/23 – 12.45 – 1.15 pm.”

Below is a sample of the feedback to this initiative from of one such local group supporting the collaboration. It goes without saying that the Family Centre is a longstanding champion of Children:

Dr Sandy De Silva, Executive Director of Family Centre, added, “War affects children in psychologically profound ways. War-affected children lose their sense of being protected which can have long-term detrimental effects on their sense of safety in the world and on their ability to have healthy relationships.

“These impacts in childhood may adversely affect the life trajectory of children far more than adults. Long after the war has ended, children’s lives will never attain the potential they had before the impact of war. The experience of indifference from the surrounding world, or, worse still, malevolence may cause children to suffer loss of meaning and identity in the world. So, Family Centre proudly joins in this collective public effort to back UNESCO’s efforts to protect all war affected children.”
