November Is Men’s Health Awareness Month

November is Men’s Health Awareness Month, and Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre are calling for the community to come together to raise awareness about prostate cancer, as well as generate funds to support Men’s Health initiatives in Bermuda.

A spokesperson said, “This year, several events are planned for November, including a free presentation of The Silent Killer: Prostate Cancer in the Black Community.

“The aim is to break down the often-taboo subject of prostate health. Alternatively, screenings can be booked as a private event for ten people or more in a safe environment, such as a place of work, community space, or gym/club.

“Regular exercise is a key element in reducing one’s risk for certain cancers. The AXA XL Man on the Run 5K offers males a unique opportunity to support each other in Bermuda’s only male-only walk/run event.

“So, gather your teams – the more, the merrier! All of Bermuda’s males are welcome to participate in the running race, competitive walk, non-competitive walk, and school spirit categories. Races begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 12th, at Warwick Academy. Register for the AXA XL Man on the Run 5k today at www.racedayworld.com

“Another opportunity to support men’s health is MOvember Bermuda™ – a month-long fundraising event for a great cause. Men can grow their facial hair for 30 days, host a function or gathering to raise funds or donate directly to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre via www.chc.bm. Registration is free, and every face, function and donation counts in raising awareness for men’s health.

“Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men. At Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, the belief is that everyone should have access to necessary cancer care and treatment regardless of their level of health insurance or ability to pay. 100% of funds raised in November support free cancer prevention programs and the Equal Access Fund, which will assist with the cost of mammograms [yes, men get breast cancer!], ultrasounds, prostate consultations, and radiation therapy treatment.

“Community-funded care starts with you. Visit www.chc.bm for more information on how you can get involved.”
