Minister Pays Tribute To George Richardson

July 1, 2024

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Sen. Owen Darrell joined the community today in mourning the passing of Mr. George Richardson, the founder of Richardson’s Gombeys.

A spokesperson said, “George Richardson first started Richardson’s Gombeys in 1973, and his lifelong dedication and passion for the Gombey tradition has left an indelible mark on Bermuda’s community.

“Richardson’s Gombeys captivated audiences both locally and internationally, including a celebrated performance at Boston’s Eastern Parkway Caribbean Festival. George’s legacy extends beyond performance; he dedicated himself to teaching countless children about drumming and the Gombey tradition, endearing himself to many in the Gombey community as “Uncle George”.

Today Minister Darrell said, “George Richardson’s life was a testament to the vibrant cultural heritage of Bermuda. From humble beginnings on Pond Hill, Pembroke, George’s love for Gombeys blossomed during his childhood. George managed Richardson’s Gombeys with unwavering dedication, receiving invaluable support from his sister, Gloria Tacklyn, who handcrafted the troupe’s vibrant Gombey suits.

“His commitment to tradition was evident in his meticulous handcrafting of regalia, including hats, without the aid of a sewing machine. His tireless efforts and boundless enthusiasm ensured the preservation and proliferation of the Gombey tradition for future generations. On behalf of the Government of Bermuda and The Department of Culture, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his remarkable spirit and contributions.”
