BUEI To Host ‘Black Film Experience’

In celebration of Black History Month, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] will present its ‘Black Film Experience’.

A spokesperson said, “This series will feature a range of films made by emerging Black directors, actors, and screenwriters. Three highly acclaimed films will be showcased during the month: ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ [2024], ‘Summer of Soul’ [2021], and ‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ [2024].

“Each film will be shown on a different day and time, so be sure to mark your calendars! The month will start with a screening of ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ on Bob Marley’s 80th birthday, Tuesday, February 6th at 7:00pm.

“This 2024 Musical/Drama directed by Kevin Macdonald gives an inside look at the life, family and legacy of Bob Marley, featuring rare footage and interviews with those close to him. A journey from his early life to later international success as a reggae superstar and spokesperson. The renowned musician is played by Kingsley Ben-Adir [Peaky Blinders, Barbie, One Night in Miami…]. The film also stars Lashana Lynch [Fast Girls, No Time to Die, The Woman King], James Norton [Rush, Mr. Turner, Rogue Agent], Tosin Cole [Second Coming, Burning Sands, The Souvenir], Anthony Welsh [Red Tails, Journeyman, The Personal History of Davis Copperfield], Michael Gandolfini [Ocean’s 8, The Independent, Beau Is Afraid], Nadine Marshall [Club Le Monde, Second Coming, A Street Cat Named Bob], and more.

“‘Bob Marley: One Love’ is rated PG-13, with a runtime of 1 hour and 47 minutes. ‘Summer of Soul’ will be shown on Saturday, February 8 at 7:00pm.

“The full title of this 2021 historical/musical film is: “Summer of Soul [...or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised].” Over the course of six weeks during the summer of 1969, thousands of people attended the Harlem Cultural Festival to celebrate Black history, culture, music, and fashion. Directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson in his directorial debut, this documentary-style film presents Rock & Roll through the lens of Black Woodstock.

“‘The Summer of Soul’ is rated PG-13, with a runtime of 1 hour and 58 minutes.

“Finally, ‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ will be shown on Wednesday, February 26 at 7:00pm. ‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ is a 2024 drama written and directed by Titus Kaphar, an American contemporary painter and filmmaker whose work reconfigures and regenerates art history to include African-American subjects. In the film, a Black artist on the path to success is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, a recovering addict desperate to reconcile. Together, they struggle and learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving. The film stars André Holland [42, Selma, Moonlight], Andra Day [Marshall, The United States vs, Billie Holiday, The Deliverance], John Earl Jelks [Compensation, Enter the Danderous Mind, Night Comes On], and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor [If Beale Street Could Talk, King Richard, The Color Purple].

“‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ is rated R, with a runtime of 1 hour and 57 minutes.
