Khano Smith has signed a multi-year contract extension to remain head coach and general manager of United Soccer League [USL] Championship side Rhode Island.

Smith, the former Bermuda captain, made history in his first year as a head coach, leading Rhode Island to the Eastern Conference final in their inaugural season.

Appointed in March 2023, Smith brought a wealth of experience to Rhode Island. A former New England Revolution winger, he quickly established a competitive culture, setting the foundation for the team’s early success.

Michael Parkhurst, Rhode Island’s co-founder and technical advisor, praised Smith’s leadership and the team’s rapid progress.

“We knew we wanted to be a competitive and play-off-calibre team from day one,” he told abc6.com.

“It’s so challenging to put together a brand-new team and have success right away, and that’s why it’s so impressive to see the team Khano has assembled fight on the field and proudly represent our club in the community.

“Last season’s success was a product of the work that goes on behind the scenes, from organisation and player management to training and performance.
“We are incredibly excited for the future growth of our club behind Khano’s leadership.”

Smith’s coaching résumé reflects a steady rise through the ranks. He spent four seasons as the first assistant coach at Birmingham Legion FC, guiding the Alabama club to four consecutive postseason appearances.

He previously served for three seasons as an assistant coach with Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League [NWSL].
