Dellwood Middle School took home first place and a $5,000 cheque for the school, in a mural competition sponsored by the Green family in partnership with the Bermuda National Gallery [BNG].

A spokesperson said, “The competition’s theme was ‘Bermuda in the Style of Andy Warhol’, a precursor to an upcoming exhibition Andy Warhol: Portraits from the Factory, which presents a selection of artworks from the Green family’s private collection opening at BNG on May 29th.

“Dellwood’s mural depicted their own rendition of Andy Warhol’s signature Campbell’s Soup Cans – but with a Bermuda twist. Colours chosen and icons adorning the cans were each altered to represent Bermuda.”

When asked who chose the symbols depicted on the cans in the winning mural, one student said, “We all did. Everyone pulled together ideas and decided which were going to be put on paper. We started with 16 and then each picked their 8 favorites.” Another added, “You don’t see soup cans a lot, but the symbols on them represent Bermudian culture which is very special because that’s where we live.”

The spokesperson said, “Second place and a $3,000 prize was awarded to Victor Scott Primary School, who painted a mural featuring Bermuda onions and Bermudiana flowers, while Somersfield Academy’s Bermuda kites flying over Bermuda rooftops nabbed third place and a $2,000 cheque.

“Murals from all 17 participating schools have now been installed around the Luscar Place construction site on Pitts Bay Road for the public to enjoy and will remain there for the project’s duration.

Participating schools were: Bermuda Centre for Creative Learning, The Bermuda High School, Bermuda Institute, Chatmore British International School, Dellwood Middle School, East End Primary School, Elliot Primary School, Francis Patton Primary School, Mount Saint Agnes Academy, Purvis Parish School, Saltus Grammar School, Sandys Secondary Middle School, Somersfield Academy, St. David’s Primary School, Victor Scott Primary School, Warwick Academy, and West Pembroke Primary School.

“Leftover painting supplies were donated to the Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation.”

Alexander Green, on behalf of the Green family, said: “The artistic expression of the school students was tremendous. During the competition, judges and onlookers were captivated by the vibrant ideas and boundless imagination displayed by our young people. We encourage our community to admire the students’ murals on display.”

Jennifer L. Phillips, BNG Executive Director, said: “We would like to thank the Green family for their continued encouragement and hosting of the mural competition, as well as our incredible volunteers whose assistance ensured the event ran smoothly. The creativity on display was so inspiring, and all the young artists appeared to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. We hope students will continue their exploration of Andy Warhol by visiting the Bermuda National Gallery to view Portraits from the Factory, which opens at the end of this month. Admission is free and, as always, BNG will be offering free class tours for schools and camps which can be booked online at www.bng.bm/school-tours.”

The spokesperson said, “The Green family as developers are known for creating landmark structures as multi-purpose gathering spaces where design, art, and community coexist. This is the inspiration for Luscar Place, coupled with the students’ eye-catching designs for all to admire.”
