Diversions & Power Outage Due To Collision

[Updated] Police have implemented temporary traffic diversions on Harbour Road in Paget due to a car crash that occurred early this morning [Sept 4].

A police spokesperson said, “As a result of a road traffic collision which occurred on Harbour Road, near the junction with Lover’s Lane, Paget, the following traffic diversions are now in place.

“Traffic coming from the west end is being diverted from Harbour Road onto Chapel Road.

“Traffic traveling west is being diverted from Harbour Road onto Lover’s Lane.

“Residents between Highwood Lane and Chapel Road, will have to travel though Chapel Road, to get to their destinations.”

Update 7.23am: A police spokesperson said, “Harbour Road, near the junction with Lover’s Lane, Paget, [the scene of last night’s collision] will remain closed for an extended period this morning. A utility pole was brought down in that incident and repair work is ongoing. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes to get to their destinations.”

In separate statement, BELCO spokesperson said, “The outage in Paget will continue until our crews are able to complete repairs. This outage is the result of a vehicle accident. Our crew is working on restoring power to all those affected as quickly & safely as possible.

“Traffic travelling east is being diverted from Harbour Rd to Chapel Rd. Traffic travelling west is being diverted from Harbour Rd onto Lover’s Lane. Residents between Highwood Lane & Chapel Rd, will have to travel through Chapel Rd, to get to their destinations.

“Please exercise extreme caution when driving, walking or riding near our working crews. The safety of you, our crew, the public and all road users is paramount.

“If you are affected by an outage, please unplug all sensitive equipment and electronics. We thank you for your patience.”

Update: A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Public Works and Environment is advising the motoring public of an emergency road closure on Harbour Road, which will remain in effect until further notice.

“The closure has been implemented following an accident that resulted in damage to a BELCO utility pole. Emergency response teams are currently on-site working to carry out urgent repairs and restore the road for safe use as quickly as possible.

“During this period, eastbound traffic will be rerouted via Chapel Lane, while westbound traffic will be diverted via Lovers Lane. Motorists are urged to avoid the area, use alternate routes, and follow any instructions from officials present.”

Update 2.50pm: A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Public Works and Environment advises the motoring public that the emergency road closure on Harbour Road in Paget remains in effect and will continue into the late evening hours of Thursday, 4 September 2025.

“The closure, which was implemented earlier today following an accident, is now required to remain in place to facilitate ongoing BELCO utility pole repair works. Crews are working to complete these emergency repairs and restore safe access to the road as soon as possible.

“As of this afternoon, westbound motorists departing from the City of Hamilton are strongly advised to avoid Harbour Road entirely and use detour routes via Middle Road and South Road.

“Traffic advisory signs are being placed at the Crow Lane roundabout to redirect commuters.

“To further assist with traffic flow, the turn onto Middle Road at the Paget traffic light is now blocked. All westbound traffic is being directed up South Road instead.

“This measure is intended to prevent congestion in the right-turn lane at the Paget light and keep through traffic moving. Motorists may rejoin Middle Road after passing the Paget traffic light.

“Motorists should expect delays and increased congestion along the alternative routes during the evening commute. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and follow all posted signs and directions from officials.”

Update 4.05pm: BELCO Managing Director, Shelly Leman said: “Shortly before midnight on Wednesday, September 3rd, a car was involved in a road traffic accident in the area of Lover’s Lane Paget which resulted in a BELCO pole being snapped in half blocking the road and causing an outage to area residents.

“BELCO crews attended the scene, rerouted power to restore some customers and have been working to replace the broken pole and restore power to the remaining customers. Other utilities are also repairing their infrastructure that was damaged in the accident. The road has remained closed throughout vehicle removal and repair works due to the significant safety risk posed by the damage pole.

“While work is ongoing, Harbour Road will remain closed in the area of Lover’s Lane Paget through the 5:00pm rush hour.

“Traffic travelling east is being diverted from Harbour Road to Chapel Road. Traffic travelling west is being diverted from Harbour Road onto Lover’s Lane. Residents between Highwood Land and Chapel Road, will have to travel through Chapel Road, to get to their destinations.

“BELCO asks that those driving, walking or riding near our working crews please exercise extreme caution as the safety of the public, our crew, and all road users is paramount.

“If residents have been affected by an outage, please unplug all sensitive equipment and electronics.
