BELCO “Closely Monitoring” Hurricane Melissa
BELCO is “closely monitoring Hurricane Melissa and its potential impacts to the island later this week.”
A spokesperson said, “Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited [BELCO] today advised residents that it is closely monitoring Hurricane Melissa and its potential impacts to the island later this week.
“BELCO’s Crisis Management Team [CMT] has met twice to review all preparation protocols and will continue meeting regularly until the storm’s impacts have passed. In the event that Hurricane Melissa does impact the island, BELCO stands ready to respond.
“BELCO’s Hurricane Plan has been enacted to coordinate preparations ahead of any potential impacts from Hurricane Melissa. Through this process, critical spares are strategically placed in the western and eastern ends of the island, crew assignments are being finalized, additional bucket trucks are being prepared, and hurricane kits have been restocked to ensure rapid response.
“Should Bermuda be impacted by Melissa and it results in power outages, restoration crews will start work as soon as it is declared safe to do so and will continue to work until every customer has had power restored.
“The public can get updates on any storm-related outages on BELCO’s website and social media pages, inclusive of Facebook, X and Instagram.”
BELCO Managing Director Shelly Leman said, “With Hurricane Melissa approaching, we are taking this storm seriously and have enacted our full Hurricane Plan to ensure we are ready to respond. BELCO’s Crisis Management Team is meeting regularly and our crews are finalizing preparations across the island. I urge all residents and businesses to prepare now for potentially high winds overnight Thursday into Friday.
