Alliance Française Celebrates 60th Anniversary

2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the Alliance Française des Bermudes, celebrating six decades of promoting the French language and Francophone culture on the island.

A spokesperson said, “Founded in 1965, the Alliance Française has grown into a lively community hub for language learning, cultural exchange, and friendship between Bermuda and the French-speaking world. Thanks to the dedication of its volunteer committees, teachers, and partners, the Alliance continues to thrive as a bridge between cultures.”

“The Alliance is for everyone — Bermudians and residents alike,” says the Alliance’s President, Frédérique Nappée. “You don’t have to be francophone to join us. Our goal is to make French and Francophone culture accessible, enjoyable, and inspiring for the whole community.”

A spokesperson added, “Each year, the Alliance hosts around 30 events, including French dinners, wine tastings, concerts, monthly French film screenings at the BUEI, pétanque tournaments, and celebrations of French and Francophone holidays such as Bastille Day, Galette des Rois, and Fête nationale du Québec. Most activities are bilingual or include English subtitles, making them open to all — whether or not attendees speak French.

“The Alliance also offers monthly ‘Cafés Français’, a welcoming gathering for both francophones living in Bermuda and anyone interested in French language and culture. These informal meetups provide an opportunity to connect, share, and keep the spirit of Francophonie alive on the island.

“If you’re learning French or simply wish to practice the language, this warm and intimate setting is perfect for you. Participants are always happy to chat, share, and help you gain confidence while enjoying good company and conversation in French. For young learners, the French Club meets weekly and welcomes about 40 children aged 4 to 13, both native and non-native speakers. Qualified teachers lead engaging workshops to strengthen language skills while nurturing an appreciation of Francophone culture.

“The Scholarship Program, organized by the Alliance and generously supported by the Christian Humann Foundation, allows Bermuda students aged 14 to 17 to spend three weeks in France each summer. Since 2001, more than 120 students have benefited from this unique opportunity to study French and discover France.”

“This experience was eye-opening and amazing, allowing for deeper cultural understanding and appreciation,” says Satya Darrell, a 2022 scholarship recipient.

A spokesperson added, “The 60th Anniversary Celebration will take place on Friday, November 21, 2025, at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club [RBYC] — an evening of French food, music, and conviviality open to all. Tickets are available now at bdatix.bm.

“As the Alliance celebrates this milestone year, it continues to build connections through language, culture, and community — ensuring that the spirit of Francophonie remains vibrant in Bermuda for generations to come.”
