A Bermudian nursing student studying in Britain is raising funds to support a month-long clinical placement in Tanzania aimed at expanding her experience of healthcare.

Troyleta Franklin, a second-year nursing student at the University of Bradford, is preparing to travel to Tanzania in June as part of an international placement programme designed to expose students to different healthcare systems and clinical environments.

Ms Franklin, who is working towards a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Honours, said the four-week placement will provide hands-on experience and an opportunity to better understand global health challenges while developing nursing skills.

“It’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” she told Bernews.

“I’d have probably never otherwise travelled to Tanzania. The university offers a grant, which covers your airline ticket and registration fee for your accommodation.

“We’ve been told to arrive in Tanzania with a free mind. It will be very different to what we’re used to in terms of patient care.”

The placement will be undertaken alongside fellow student Sian Hamilton.

The pair are seeking to raise £5,000 through an online fundraising campaign to cover accommodation and placement support costs during their stay.

Ms Franklin, 29, said the experience would play a significant role in shaping her future career as a nurse by broadening her professional and cultural understanding of patient care.
