Column: Dr. Watkins On SailGP, Health & More
[Column written by Dr Kimberley Watkins]
Last weekend, the turquoise waters of Bermuda played host to the thrilling spectacle of Sail GP, drawing the world’s top sailing talent to its shores. While the high-speed action on the water captivated fans, an equally impressive team was on hand behind the scenes, dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of athletes, staff, and spectators alike.
Central to the medical response was an internationally renowned team comprising Neil Heron, Hélène Rousselon, and lead physiotherapist Charlotte Porter. Over two action-packed days, this expert group delivered first-class care with their team, expertly managing both routine medical needs and emergency situations. Their commitment and professionalism were instrumental in maintaining the event’s high safety standards.
Collaboration was key throughout the event. The visiting medical team worked seamlessly alongside Bermuda’s own support networks, including Dr. Pete Babeckas, the dedicated professionals of St John’s Ambulance, and the Bermuda Hospitals Board [BHB]. Being part of this collaborative effort gave me the opportunity to work closely with both international colleagues and local experts. With thorough preparation and teamwork, we stood ready for any serious eventualities, ensuring rapid response capability throughout the regatta.
As a member of the medical team and representative of the Bermuda Physiotherapy Association, I was privileged to support such a prestigious event and contribute to the well-being of world-class athletes. The experience also offered our members valuable opportunities to collaborate with international colleagues, fostering professional development and strengthening future partnerships.
As Sail GP concluded with spectacular racing and safe outcomes for all, the event stood as a testament not only to athletic excellence but also to the vital role of medical teamwork among the international medical team, resident staff, and local support teams in international sporting events.
