Minister Weeks Visits RBR At Warwick Camp
Minister of National Security Michael Weeks visited Warwick Camp to meet with the leadership of the Royal Bermuda Regiment as it prepares for its overseas camp in the UK, where Regiment personnel will participate in various aspects of public order and weapons training.
“Minister Weeks was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of National Security, Lt. Col. Edward Lamb, and was led on the tour by the Commanding Officer of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, Lt. Col. Duncan Simons,” a spokesperson said.
“The visit formed part of the Minister’s continuing series of tours across departments and services under the Ministry of National Security’s remit.
“It also provided a timely opportunity, ahead of the Regiment’s overseas camp in the UK, for the Minister to be briefed on the Regiment’s operational readiness and preparations for the training mission.
“These visits allow the Minister to meet directly with personnel, observe operations and keep abreast of the issues, responsibilities and current projects in each department.
“During the Warwick Camp tour, Minister Weeks received briefings on the Regiment’s operational readiness, training, staffing, infrastructure, recruitment, youth development and wider support to the community, including its readiness to carry out the planned training programme in the UK.
“The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss the Regiment’s work through the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard, particularly as Bermuda enters the busy boating season and prepares for the hurricane season.”
Minister Weeks stated, “The Royal Bermuda Regiment has a long and proud history of service to Bermuda, and it remains one of the most important institutions under the Ministry of National Security.
“This visit allowed me to hear directly from the Commanding Officer and his team, to better understand the Regiment’s current operations, and to see the work being done at Warwick Camp.
“With the Regiment preparing for overseas training in the UK, it was also important for me to be briefed on their operational readiness and to be satisfied that the necessary preparations are in place for them to carry out that training mission safely and effectively.”
The Government spokesperson said, “The Minister noted that the Regiment continues to serve Bermuda in a wide range of roles, from ceremonial duties and community support to disaster response, maritime safety and aid to the civil authority.”
He added, “The Regiment is there when Bermuda needs it. We saw that again recently during the visit of His Majesty the King, where the Regiment played an important role in supporting an historical national event with professionalism and pride.
“As summer begins, the public will also see the continued importance of the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard, which patrols Bermuda’s waters, supports safe boating, assists with search and rescue, and works with other agencies to protect our marine environment.”
Minister Weeks added, “The men and women of the Royal Bermuda Regiment carry responsibilities that matter to the whole Island. Whether they are supporting national events, responding after a storm, assisting during an emergency, developing young people through training and service, or helping to keep our waters safe, their contribution is significant, impactful and valued.
“I want to thank Lt. Col. Simons and his Regiment team for the tour and for the work they continue to do on behalf of Bermuda.”
