MLK Youth Awards Presentation On May 9
A Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Awards presentation will be held on Saturday [May 9] at the Bermuda College, featuring a panel discussion, student reflections and more.
A spokesperson said, “On Saturday, May 9th at 5.30 pm through a collaboration involving Imagine Bermuda, Department of Education, Bermuda College, Bermuda is Love and Chewstick, there will be the Presentation of the Martin Luther King/Progressive Group – Youth Awards, held at the Athene Lecture Theatre of the Bermuda College. Young adults – on the one hand – and students from various schools, will engage in reflecting on the iconic April 1967 speech by MLK, calling for a Revolution of Values; through dialogue, speech and song.
“Following a welcome by College President Dr. David Sam who has been leading a renaissance at that institution, there will be a Panel Discussion. That dialogue on the ‘call’ of MLK, will involve young adults who themselves are actively involved in our community, fostering positive change. Panellists include Ajai Peets -Bermuda Youth Connect; Gabriel Smith – HuRen and William Campbell – Bermuda is Love.
“Following the Panel Discussion there will be an opportunity for nominated students from various schools, to make Presentations – 7 mins max – which speak to the global and local implications of MLK’s invocation, in the context of the 2020’s. Their presentation will be either spoken or in song.
“This is not a competition. However, for this 1st Annual MLK/PG Youth Awards, students will have the opportunity to participate in 4 Draws for ‘Further Learning Stipends’ – $1,000 each. This, thanks to donations from members of the community.
“We note that panellists are currently around the same ages of the Progressive Group members, when those visionaries were fostering a revolution of values for our Island in 1959. Centenarian – Izola Harvey – the oldest remaining member of the Progressive Group has confirmed her attendance to meet these young people. Florenz Maxwell and Will Francis are hopeful to attend, if circumstances allow.
“Another cross-generational opportunity for the young people, will be meeting Victor Fishington, a humble exemplar, fostering community solidarity as a trade unionist. At 80, Victor -continues to nurture a ‘People Centred ethos’ through his extensive community involvement; at Bright Temple AME, his lodge at Khyber Pass and occasionally at Berkeley Institute.
“This free event will include light refreshments. To secure seating, attendees should Register at https://www.bermudaislove.com Young people are invited to a ‘Meet & Greet’ at 5 – 5.30 pm to find out about relevant community groups.”
