City of Hamilton: May 24th ‘Camp’ Guidelines

May 19, 2010

The City of Hamilton has made a request to the public that they adhere to certain guidelines to ensure safety and a smooth running of all the day’s events.

Chief Operating Officer and Secretary to the City of Hamilton, Edward Benevides said that “Safety is our number one concern on Bermuda Day and we want to ensure everyone has an enjoyable holiday watching the half marathon and the parade. We are reminding the public of these measures to prevent injury to pedestrians, particularly those who may be visually impaired or elderly.”

They have asked that anyone who sets up viewing ‘camps’ on the May 24th holiday in the City please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • ‘Camps’ can be set up from midnight on May 24 and someone must stay at the site from the time it is set up.
  • Ropes, chains or any other type of barrier must not be used to cordon off the sidewalk and streets as this is a trip hazard and could cause serious injury to a pedestrian.
  • The ‘camps’ must be set up so as not to stop pedestrians moving freely along the side walk. This includes anyone in a wheel chair or individuals pushing strollers.
  • No tents can be erected on the sidewalks or on the streets.
  • Spray paint, duck tape, permanent markers or any other substance cannot be used to deface buildings, sidewalks or streets.

Food and entertainment vendors will be located in Hamilton during the Bermuda Day festivities. Fun castles, snacks and dining options can be found at Number One and Number Five car parks and at Victoria Park.

The parade, which begins at 1:30 pm,will follow the same route as in previous years. Starting at the junction of Bermudiana Road and Front Street, the parade will continue along Front Street to Court Street where it will make a left turn on to Court Street. The parade will then turn left on to Church Street, make a right turn on to Burnaby Hill, then on to Cedar Avenue and proceed along past the Tennis Stadium to Marsh Folly Road. The parade will then make a right turn on to Dutton Avenue and into Bernard Park.
