Man Overboard On Cruise: FBI Investigating

May 13, 2010

explorer-of-the-seasLaw enforcement officials investigating the disappearance of a crew member were waiting at a New Jersey Cruise ship terminal when the Explorer of the Seas cruise ship docked on Saturday, May 7th.

On the cruise ship’s fourth call to Bermuda for the year, it safely departed Dockyard, Bermuda on Saturday May 1st evening, and on May 5th fellow crewmembers reported their coworker missing. Reports say that closed-circuit camera footage showed that the man climbed over the railing and lowered himself over the side of the ship.

The 26 yr old crew member is a citizen of the African country Mauritius. Despite a search involving Coast guard search planes and boats, he nor his body was ever recovered, and the man is now presumed dead.

The FBI was selected to investigate the case, as the man fell overboard outside of the boundary of the continental USA. This was the third such incident for Royal Caribbean in recent months. In March 2010 a crew member on the Radiance of the Seas also went overboard, and died. In December 2010, Neha Chhikara, the 23-year-old wife of a Royal Caribbean crew member, jumped off the Monarch of the Seas in the Bahamas.

Explorer of the Seas is set to call 25 times this year docking at Kings Wharf in Dockyard, with October being its last date of call into Bermuda for the 2010 season.
