17-Yr-Old Ends Day As Somerset’s Top Scorer

July 30, 2010

[Updated] 17-year-old Deunte Darrell made a showing that far surpassed his years, scoring 72 in yesterday’s (July 29) Cup Match play at Somerset Cricket Club to end the day as the top scorer for Somerset. During the game the television commentator said texts were flooding in from his fellow Cedarbridge students, full of congratulations and pride for their fellow student’s performance, that saw him more than hold his own against the many veterans on the field. The high school student put on a performance that even the most die hard St George’s fans would have to begrudgingly commend, and one that bodes well for the future of Bermuda cricket.

A right-hand batsman and medium-pace bowler, Deunte started playing cricket at the age of ten. He has represented Bermuda internationally at the Under-15 and Under-19 levels and was part of our squad for the U-19 World Cup in 2008.

The Cedarbridge student is making his second Cup Match appearance, after making his debut last year at only 16 years old when he became one of the youngest players to ever make an appearance in the history of the classic.

Bermuda National Cricket Coach David Moore commended his talent, and has said that Deunte is very likely to figure in senior international matches in the future. His proud father (in the white shirt) is pictured below congratulating him after his half-century yesterday:
