Minister Blakeney Endorses Paula Cox For Premier

August 5, 2010

Minister Glenn Blakeney today (Aug 5) released a statement endorsing Deputy Premier Paula Cox to become the PLP Leader and Premier of Bermuda.

His endorsement comes on top of the strong party support which was already shown by numerous PLP officials at the press conference this morning, with those present including: Minister Walter Roban, Minister Neletha Butterfield, Minister Michael Scott, Minister Elvin James, Minister Derrick Burgess, Attorney General Senator Kim Wilson, former Premier and now MP Dame Jennifer Smith, former premier and now MP Alex Scott, MP Wayne Furbert, Senator Marc Bean and Senator Walton Brown. BIU President Chris Furbert was also in attendance, saying although the Union has not yet released a statement, he was there in personal support of Minister Cox.

Minister Blakeney, who currently serves in Cabinet as the Minister of The Environment & Sports, says he sees the Deputy Leader and Finance Minister as the natural successor to Premier Brown, saying that “she is the best choice particularly in light of her stellar track record of public service, unwavering commitment to the Party’s ideals, as well as her political pedigree, experience and expertise.“

He states:

Minister Cox has served Bermuda exceptionally well and has lead by example. She has been a steady, stabilizing political force who is widely respected among all segments of the community. Minister Cox will galvanize the Party and indeed the country, because she evokes a unique level of comfort and confidence predicated upon work ethic, integrity and the general trust that she will always put Bermuda first.

Mr. Blakeney cites her “incredible commitment and her success in ensuring Bermuda’s continued good standing as a leading international business centre and global financial services domicile, while simultaneously enabling Bermudian entrepreneurship through the strategic initiatives of the Bermuda Small Business Development Corporation and the North Hamilton Economic Empowerment Zone.“

Mr. Blakeney believes there is any number of elected PLP members capable of leading, however, in consideration of who would be best among equals, he states:

Paula Cox will move the country forward together in a spirit of cooperation and purpose, because she is results driven with a “grass roots” understanding of the challenges facing Bermuda and equal commitment to help improve the standard of life for every Bermudian. I find Paula to be a sensitive and caring individual who has Bermuda’s best interest at heart. Her strength of character, political integrity and vision for Bermuda will bode well for the country’s immediate future and indeed its continued long term success.

Same ole same ole. Endorsements are like entitlement.

What do you expect from Ministers and other Cabinet members and other Members of Parliament.

They want to keep their positions and authority. Paula Cox is the Deputy Premier, duly elected by her peers etc.

You think these guys and girls are gonna support another MP that is further down the food chain?

Paula gets elected and all is well et al.

As for Mr. Lister…stay the course ole bouy. Administrations come and go but ‘Listermint’ will ease the pain in the ‘cognitis’ and help heal the tensions in the throat.

“Listermint” …FDA approved and now available in Bermuda. It’s free…detz rite…it’s free even for temporary ‘exspecrorants’ and those with “SOBS”…..

Old Mother ‘……………’ went to the cupboard and found that it was bare………

Premier Lister fixed the blister and things are “ALL” medium rare………………..

    A great day too all.

ps. Um goin in dee freej ann take ah nep….wiff ah cole burr…….hits ah 101 degreeze…..damn…I know how those Moscowvites must be feeling……………

Dont underestimate endorsements. Why do you think Nike spends so much paying Tiger and used to be Jordan to wear their stuff.

Though some of your points hold merit, the truth remains that these supporters are not effectively stupid. They have worked with all parties presenting themselves as possible leader and go now with the person having the greatest degree of expertise, integrity and political astuteness to get this country back on the right track.

Premier Cox’s greatest challenge will be establishing a Cabinet which holds half her intellectual sustenance to move this country forward. She can only work with the people we elected. Very sad but true as so many of them do not have the skills, the committment, or frankly the intellect to lead this country. Her style of leadership will quickly dismiss this group and attract those who really can make a difference.

Her personal challenge is to not lose the power or her words or intent given her generally sombre and soft demeanour. This woman is a powerhouse, make no mistake.

    “Power of her words”………………

    Words mean nothing.

Deeds do. Prior, during or after-”Words”

Wayne Furbert for Premier………………oops……..why not. He’s a PLP member and ……..

It is no surprise to see these Ministers etc. solidly backing Cox. After all, they know they will not be held accountable for wasting millions of taxpayers money, all approved by her.(?)
Furthermore they realize that they will not get all the perks and salaries anywhere else if they lost their Ministries.
However, Cox is very intelligent although apparently not tough enough to handle certain Ministers. She must ditch some of Brown’s fawning cheerleaders who are simply singing for their suppers, and pick her own team.

    @ Mary Williams,

A Cabinet Minister need not be elected. (eg.Burch)
