The “Other” Election Tonight: Deputy Leader

October 28, 2010

Although much of the focus with tonight’s election is on who will be the new PLP Party Leader and Premier, other PLP positions will be up for election including that of Deputy Leader.

As locals are aware, the present Deputy Leader of the PLP is Paula Cox, who is running for the leadership position, and is considered a front runner in that challenge.

There has been no official announcement made, however sources indicate that those in contention include present Minister of Works & Engineering Derrick Burgess as well as backbencher Randy Horton. It is said that Dale Butler, who is in the leadership race but considered a long-shot – is also actively seeking the Deputy role.

Sources say that if Terry Lister, the third candidate in the leadership race, does not succeed in winning the leadership position he may be nominated for the Deputy’s role. Speculation also exists that MP Michael Weeks may be nominated by someone from the floor.

Unlike the leadership challenger, there appears to be no defined front runner in the race for Deputy Leader.

The vote for Deputy Leader will be taken immediately after the voting for leader has concluded. The winner is mandated to have 50% of the vote, and if the race does split 4/5 ways this may not be achieved on the first ballot, which will require additional rounds of balloting .

The 50% + 1 and secret ballot formula as widely reported is not specifically referred to in the Party Constitution for the election of Party leader or Deputy Leader. The 50% + 1 formula is referred to in the context of a candidate selection vote at branch level. In addition, the failure to reach a 50% + 1 majority in the contest for leader is not addressed in the Party Constitution in terms of subsequent ballots being held and/or trading of one candidate’s delegates for another’s. Makes it all very interesting if the Leader vote ended up 80/78/6 or similar. I stand to be corrected. Also interesting that the Party Leader and MP (Dr. Brown), although entitled to vote, and we have the media is reporting that he will not be present. Not present = not voting?

No matter who wins it will be of no consequence – same mess created by all of those going for the top positions

I disagree. I am very confident that the Party will embark on a new path with the election of a new leader. Confidence in the Party will increase; confidence in Bermuda will increase and better days lay ahead. Sure, there will be those on the margins, politically and socially and in other ways, but I’m very optimistic that we will see a more inclusive, more responsible and a more caring PLP team going forward.

i dont see why that should happen though. they allowed him to destroy bermuda. All of a sudden they have a conscience?

Why will the Party embark on a NEW path etc? What was wrong with the old one? Is this some sort of admission or concession?
