Seven Athletes Now Carifta Qualified

[Updated with video] Despite the inclement weather this weekend [Feb 20], two local athletes managed to reach the qualifying standard for the Carifta Games during the BTFA track meet.

Victoria Clarke qualified in the 100m U17 girls in a time of 12.37, while Quassie Douglas ran the 1500m U17 Girls in a time of 5:16.98. Jeneko Place ran in his first meet of the season and ran a 10.94 which is only a couple of seconds from the qualifying standard. The video of the 100m race is below.

Bermuda now has seven athletes who have reached Carifta qualifying standards:

  • Henry Stevens Carty U20 Boys 800m
  • Shaquille Dill U20 Boys 800m
  • Kyrah Scraders U 17 800m & 1500m
  • Quassie Douglas U7 Girls 1500m
  • Bruce Degrilla U17 Boys Long Jump
  • Chas Smith U17 Boys Long Jump
  • Karim Creary U17 Boys 400m

Jamaica will host this year’s Carifta Games, which will be held from April 23-25, 2011. The Carifta Games is an annual athletics competition founded by the Caribbean Free Trade Association. Carifta has seen many world class champions come through the competition including Usain Bolt of Jamaica, Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica, Obadele Thompson of Barbados, Debbie Ferguson of the Bahamas and many more.
