Harford Murder: Gun Linked to “Wheels” Murder

March 22, 2011

kumi harford bermudaDuring the Antonio Myers murder trial yesterday [Mar.21],  an expert witness testified that one of the guns used in the Kumi Harford killing had also been used in the murder of Kenwandee “Wheels” Robinson.

30-year-old Kumi Harford [pictured] was killed at around 5am on St. Monica’s Road on December 5th, 2009. Antonio Myers, 25, of Rambling Lane, Pembroke was charged with the murder in May, 2010, charges which he denies.

During the trial, a Police officer previously identified the defendant Antonio Myers as a high-ranking member of the Middletown gang, and Mr Harford as a high ranking member of the 42nd gang

The expert said that Mr Harford was shot by two different weapons; one gun was a 9mm pistol and the other was a 40 calibre weapon. One of the guns was also used in a previous murder in the same area.

Kenwandee “Wheels” Robinson was murdered in May 2009, shot only yards away from where Mr Harford was killed later that year. 27-year-old Mr. Robinson was shot in a drive by shooting on St. Monica’s Road, Pembroke, and was pronounced dead at King Edward Memorial Hospital later that evening. His murder remains unsolved at this time.

This is the second time this month that the Court has heard that a gun used in a shooting was also used in other shootings. During the trial of Marico Bassett for the shooting of Randy Lightbourne in 2010, experts testified that the gun was linked to multiple West End shootings — including two murders that occurred in Sandys. Evidence presented by Police during the Bassett trial suggested the handgun has been circulating among members of the West End gang and the weapon has been used in a slew of serious incidents.

Dr Cumberland, an expert witness who is the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy on 7th December 2009, said Kumi Harford suffered several gunshot wounds but offered a written statement giving evidence that Mr Harford’s death was caused, principally, by four particular gun shot wounds.

One – right shoulder. Two – posterior thorax (upper body between neck and stomach). Three – left side of head. Four – chest, passing through left lung. Other gun shot wounds’s were to limbs and leg. Four bullets were retrieved from inside Mr Harford’s body. Two were found on the ground outside the car at the scene of the crime.

More and other evidence came from expert witness Janet Johnson who took the stand around 4:20pm. She has forty years of forensic experience, having started out in an FBI crime lab. She said that in all her work, she and anyone working on the evidence always wore all-enclosing forensic suits that were one-time-only suits that were destroyed immediately after use. This, she said, was standard practice as it eliminated any chance of contamination.

She gave evidence that she was called to Bermuda, got here on 6th December 2009, and immediately set to work. She examined the crime scene while the car in which Mr Harford was killed was still in situ; and she was present when Kumi Harford’s body was autopsied and forensically examined. She received the four bullets retrieved from the body.

She said that she did trajectory analyses of the shooting scene just off St Monica’s Road and from that and from cartridge cases delivered to her, from bullets retrieved at the scene as well as from inside the body, that it was determined that two shooters were involved and that two guns were involved.

One gun was a 9mm pistol and the other was a 40 calibre weapon. She noted that the 40 calibre marque is rarely seen.

Ms Johnson continued her primary evidence saying that she had received items from the Sunday morning fire at #9 Middletown Lane; had received gun shot residue swabs; and cartridge case swabs to be checked for DNA and fingerprints.

Mr Myers denies the charges, and the trial continues. For previous coverage of the trial click here.
