May 9, 2011

A newly formed anti-violence group is calling on the community to join them on June 26th for the ‘Stand Up For Change Peace Rally.’

‘Stand Up Bermuda’ is organizing the event, which will see two groups marching from both Dockyard and St.George’s starting from 12 noon. The march will end at City Hall, where the group will be addressing the Government, listening to motivational speakers as well as anti-violence themed music from local artists.

Jahma Gibbons, one of the event’s organisers, said, “The reason for it is to unite Bermuda as a whole. We want to get every charity group, business, and church to come out and stand up for Bermuda, as we feel that will be the only way to stop the violence thats going on in our island.”

“We are going to start at both ends of the island with the gombeys, and work our way all the way town, where there will be speakers and entertainment. We will also be taking part in the May 24th parade to help promote the peace march, and we are calling for all to come out and STAND UP FOR BERMUDA!!”

“We are also sending out an appeal to the church ministers to come out and support this. This is a spiritual God fearing march not religious, and this is about Bermuda as a whole. We are also going to petition the Government to change some of the laws when it comes to gangs and gang violence and also want a forensic lab set up here on island.”

“We also want to show support to all the murder victims friends and families,” concluded Mr Gibbons.

The newly formed organisation seeks to work in a community based manner to help stem the rising crime. Members of the committee include Jahma Gibbons, Gaynell Hayward, Jeff Sousa, Shawnette Sommer, Ray Charlton, Deb Lewnondowski, Juanita Leshore, Channing Seymour, Alexis Swan, Antonio Belvedere, Scott Smith and more. For more information you can join their Facebook group here.
