Premier & Ministers To Attend Miami Summit

September 19, 2011

A Bermuda delegation including Premier Paula Cox, Minister of Environment, Planning & Infrastructure Strategy Walter Roban, and Minister of Health Zane DeSilva, will attend KPMG’s Infrastructure Summit: An Island Perspective of a Global Challenge in Miami next week from September 21 – 23.

Premier Cox will deliver the Keynote Address on the opening day of the conference, Thursday September 22nd. Minister Roban will participate in a panel discussion during the event with the topic “PPP/Infrastructure Projects can be complex, and Planning should be a Prerequisite. How can we Work Together to Achieve the Best Results”

The delegation will be accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy Dr. Derrick Binns and Bermuda Hospitals Board CEO David Hill, among others.

A statement released by Government said, “This is the first time such a Summit has been held. The Summit is designed to bring together government and industry leaders from the Caribbean region who share similar challenges with regard to developing and maintaining critical national infrastructure in the face of declining government revenues and tight credit markets. All of this is driving a search for alternative funding sources, and better ways to deliver essential large capital projects.”

“KPMG is hosting the Summit, the first of its kind to share challenges, success stories and opportunities unique to island economies, while bringing together Leaders of Government, Developers and Financiers. Other countries to be involved in the Summit include the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas. A portion of the travel expenses for attendees will be covered by event organizers.”

Minister Roban said: “We anticipate that as a result of the Summit we will be better positioned to put life to our mandate to develop an Infrastructure Strategy for Bermuda. I am looking forward to attending this Summit and bringing fresh ideas back to Bermuda.”

Minister De Silva commented: “I am greatly looking forward to sharing Bermuda’s experience on establishing a Public Private Partnership with my colleagues from other Caribbean jurisdictions.”

Do some of these guys even get a chance to do the People’s business here in Bermuda?

So much travel! Will Premier Cox be receiving another wondrous award?

  3. sandgrownan says:

You know, I’m less concerned about these workshy tossers and their propensity to travel on the public purse than I am about the method of funding the new hospital.

PPP/PFI is now totally discredited as a method of paying for and the running of public services. Particularly in education and healthcare. Just when the rest of the world realises the folly of PPP, the PLP dives headfirst in the mess.

Zane, in a recent interview, even had to correct himself when he said “we don’t have to pay for it…er…well we do…but not right now”.

    • sandgrownan says:

None of the PLP faithful want to argue this one? Imagine that….

  4. Well done KPMG – keep Paula & Co distracted while Bda. economy continues to decline & debt piles up. PPP’s are on there way in the rest of the world as wise men have recognised that the Piper DOES have to be paid alot money. I.e the cost of the new Hosp. is just new Govt. debt, hidden inside a convulated agreement

  5. navin Johnson says:

yes Zane we have to start paying for it in 2013 when the island will resemble The Book of Eli or The Road..and Future Care will only cost everyone $1200 a month at that time….

  6. Terry says:

The irony of all this is the fact that Miami is not in the Carribean. It’s part of the USA.

I guess KPMG don’t have an influence on islands like Jamaica, Purta Rico, Cayman, Bahamas, et al.

Since Bermuda is not in the Carribean but has much historical ties, why not hold it here. Damn….could get some head tax………

Since all these leaders will be ‘outta counrty’ who’s gonna run the show.

Who wants a burger for lunch. I do…I do……book a flight to Charlston, closet place……..

    I need a rum…..

So does this mean Minister Roban will finally disclose how much taxpayers will have to fork over to Paget Health Services each year, for 30 years, once the new hospital is completed?

  8. Down 'n' Dirty says:

Premier got enough airmiles to last a lifetime .

  9. Rick Rock says:

So Zane wants to talk to Ministers from ‘other Caribbean jurisdictions’ .
But here’s the problem….we are not in the Caribbean.

Public Private Partnership is code for “a good way to get public money into private hands for the selected elite”.
