BIFF To Screen “Certified Copy”

October 24, 2011

Bermuda International Film Festival (BIFF)’s monthly film screening series, BIFFlix, is back with a Cannes-award winning picture in a new time slot. The one-off screening of “Certified Copy” will take place on October 30, 2011, at 5:30pm. The film will be shown in the Tradewinds Auditorium at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) on Crow Lane in Hamilton.

Certified Copy is a playful and provocative romantic drama from legendary auteur Abbas Kiarostami (Taste of Cherry, The Wind Will Carry Us), his first feature made outside of Iran.

Juliette Binoche won the esteemed Best Actress prize at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival for her performance. Binoche (Chocolat, The English Patient) plays a gallery owner living in a Tuscan village who attends a lecture by a British author (opera star William Shimell) on authenticity and fakery in art.

Afterward, she invites him on a tour of the countryside, during which he is mistaken for her husband. They keep up the pretence and continue on their afternoon out, discussing love, life and art, and increasingly behaving like a long-married couple. But are they play-acting on a whim, or is there more to their seemingly new relationship than meets the eye?

Andrew Stoneham, BIFFlix coordinator, says: “We decided to move our monthly BIFFlix screening to a Sunday evening slot following feedback from those who attended previous screenings so we hope to see lots of new faces, along with our seasoned supporters.”

Tickets are available in advance at www.tickets.biff.bm or at the door on the day from 4:30 p.m. Tickets are prices as follows: BIFF members – $9, non-members – $13. Funds raised by the screening will support the staging of the 15th annual Bermuda International Film Festival in March 2012.

Film running time is 106 minutes. For reservations and all inquiries email programming@biff.bm or call 293 3456.

Thanks! This is a great director, have to see this!

  2. Film Fan says:

Why do these movies start at 5:30 on weekend days – can’t they be later in the day so as not to interrupt the day? I think more people would go if they were to start later, say 7:30. Does anyone know why 5:30 is the chosen time?

  3. Hey There! says:

…Why do these moves start at 5.30 …so that attendees can have dinner in the restaurant below! Think about it! I would prefer 7.00 pm myself!

  4. Hey There! says:

…. typo …Why do these movies start at 5.30… sorry!

  5. BIFFlix Coordinator says:

5:30 PM was the preferred screening time slot suggested in the feedback received by regular attendees of the monthly screenings. We must also keep in mind that BIFF is run sole by volunteers so their availability plays an integral part in when we host our events. Most people prefer to spend Sunday evening with their families. With a 5:30 film screening people are still able to go home and enjoyed an evening at home.

Having said that if there was a large number of people who expressed interested in a later screening. BIFF would not be oppose to possibly putting on a second screening to accommodate those persons.

    • Give it a try! says:

Maybe you could give a later screening a try for a month? There are a lot of film fans who don’t have family to hang out with on Sunday evenings. Actually, if I were to plan to hang with family Sunday evening, I wouldn’t be able to see the film at 5:30 because I would be busy preparing dinner/whatever for the get-together. I wouldn’t be able to do both. I could do church then a lunch and spend the afternoon with my family…and then catch a later screening of a movie…that actually sounds like a nice Sunday…. Give the later screening a try! Please.

      • This is something we can certainly try, moving forward. This month is the first time showcasing our monthly film on a Sunday. We will be sure to look into the possibility of a later screening for the upcoming showcases.
