Minister: Atlanta Ties A Plus For Island

October 18, 2011

The upmarket Atlanta community of Buckhead says its recent efforts to bolster business, tourism and cultural ties with Bermuda is the first step in an ambitious plan to create an entire “International District” within the wealthy enclave.

And Bermuda’s Tourism and Business Development Minister agrees, saying the island could benefit from forging new links with cash-flush and business-friendly Buckhead.

Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell is continuing to extend his hand to the international community after adopting Bermuda as a “sister community” in August.

Bermuda officials thanked the coalition after a visit in August.

“The partnership of the Atlanta community of Buckhead and the island of Bermuda is one of immense possibilities for mutual social and economic benefit,” said Bermuda’s Minister of Business Development and Tourism Patrice Minors.

“It is one that we intend to pursue so we will, indeed, be in touch with Buckhead’s team in the near future to discuss next steps.”

The delegation met with Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling during their trip to Bermuda [he is pictured above with Buckhead banker Charlie Crawford at Hamilton CIty Hall] as well as various Government Ministers.

This week Mr. Massell said he’s just getting started on his international outreach programme, recently hosting a trade delegation from India.

“We are part of Atlanta and we support the whole picture, the long-range relationship of all of its neighbourhoods and communities, and we have served on committees with the chamber of commerce and we work with the Midtown Alliance on mutual interests,” Mr. Massell told an Atlanta newspaper this week.

“We work together but I won’t shy from being competitive. If I have an option or an opportunity, I’m going to market Buckhead first. What helps Buckhead helps Atlanta.”
