UBP Preliminary Response To Throne Speech

November 5, 2011

United Bermuda Party Members of Parliament Kim Swan and Charlie Swan issued a preliminary response to the 2011 Throne Speech this morning [Nov.5], saying they weren’t surprised to see it contained so many political promises to so many interest groups given all three of Bermuda’s parties are currently on an election-footing.

” This Throne Speech was released against the backdrop of a Bermuda that has been saddled with trying times, economically and socially,” said the UBP MPs. “Hence, election promises to address neglected areas can be like water to a thirsty man in the desert.”

The two UBP Parliamentarians said they were looking to a “lively” debate on The Throne Speech later this month.

The UBP’s Full Remarks Appear Below:

With anticipation of an election on the near horizon, it was to be expected that the Progressive Labour Party Government would deliver a Throne Speech with a list of promises in the form of initiatives and/or legislation to implemented.

Indeed there were a few occasions where mention of hot button topics drew applause from the gathering.

This Throne Speech was released against the backdrop of a Bermuda that has been saddled with trying times, economically and socially. Hence, election promises to address neglected areas can be like water to a thirsty man in the desert.

At first blush we are pleased that the Government is taking on board some recommendations that in the past have been put forward by the United Bermuda Party and the Bermuda First Initiative.

We consider that to be encouraging as we look to be constructive in our criticism whilst continuing to advance solutions that are best for our people.

We are looking forward to a lively debate on November 18, 2011.

Kim Swan: “At first blush we are pleased that the Government is taking on board some recommendations that in the past have been put forward by the United Bermuda Party and the Bermuda First Initiative.”

Craig Cannonier: “We appreciate the Government appears to be considering or adopting many of our ideas, but we remain skeptical”.

I think Mr. Swan’s right on this one. We all know that the OBA’s ideas are really the UBP’s ideas.

As far as the Bermuda First initiative, it is not surprising that the PLP Government is using some of those ideas as the PLP always participated in the initiative, first, Premier Brown and now Premier Cox.

    • Yup says:

And talking about Dr. Brown, when is he going to make a come back? He didn’t quite finish destroying Bermuda with your help.

      • White Christ says:

He certainly did destroy the Bermuda people like you hoped would last forever. However, that Bermuda saw people like me living under the lopsided elitism of the UBP and I’m glad it’s been destroyed. Christ promised to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days. Will you help? Or will you fight tooth and nail to get your old racist guard back in charge. I’ll bet if he put a white greek god or goddess statue on house of paliament grounds no one would complain. Down with white supremacy in the images which govern our society. You are suffering from loss of priviledge.

        • Star man says:

          Huh…??

        • Yup says:

You on drugs White Christ. Get into rehab!!!!!!

        • Hello says:

WOW racism, ignorance and stupidity at its finest. Ths is 2011. I guess you hanker for the past to validate your existence. Sad, sad sad. No person in the OBA or UBP wants white supremacy. Only neo nationalist loonies belive in extremist positions like that . There are a couple of extremists in the PLP, and we all know who they are and there appears to be one in you though. Check yourself in a mirror and then into MAWI, its hate like yours that holds us all back.

    • Rob says:

For me it’s not so much about Party, it’s more about having Honest Bermudians with exemplary character and are tolerant of ambiguity and remain calm, composed and steadfast to the main purpose of running this country. I would have supported the PLP if it wasn’t for the likes of Col. Burch and Dr. Brown. These people were rude and caused turmoil in this society, and the public are now paying dearly for it.

    • Sean says:

      Oh LaVerne…

Can I call you LaVerne? Instead of addressing their issues, you are still dismissing them and taking a cheap shot. At least your consistent.

  2. Red Flag says:

It is funny how both the OBA and UBP claim ownership of the same ideas, yet deny that they are one in the same. The OBA seems to want the credit for the ideas of the UBA but not the negative stigma associated with them. That can not work. Please OBA find out who you are and stand on your own merit. This “we are but we’re not” game you are playing will do nothing to help you and will prove to be your destruction.

    • Terry says:

      LaVerne, go away.

      Really.

Your back to your old tactics since you were fired from the Senate.

Or is just another “We had to deceive you”.

Your a joke and a troll with an agenda to divide.

    • Terry says:

And the PLP read the book on Governance, copied and pasted it here and on every local blog that they control along with facebook pages et al. Red flag? Don’t happen to be related to Laverne do you?

  3. same old same old says:

Terry…..behave yourself that is not called for…what is your opinion of what Mr. Swan had to say….
I want to know will the UBP or the OBA vote against any of the policies that they once or now indorsed, will they continue to play the no game regardless of its merits.

    • Terry says:

Whats not called for. Your talkin garbage and spin. Rephrase your statements. Same ole same…….jibberish.

  4. No OBA Vote says:

Granny Terry use to say “you can run but you can’t hide” You and the OBA supporters would like to separate yourselves from the UBP but can’t. Keep listening and you will hear the whispers of the UBP infused into the OBA, but your blinders won’t let you see the truth.

    • Terry says:

Granny Terry Mother always said….’No OBA vote’ means back to the Progressive Plant Tation…….

      OBA too you OBA………

Sleep well sheep herder. There will be curried lamb at the bottom pf the cliff tomorrow…….salt to taste.

      • No OBA Vote says:

Well terry the proof will be in the pudding – Craig already started out by saying the PLP has noted their initiatives, which was are that and factual of the UBP. AT the reconvening the PLP stated their platform and its a good one so the OBA is trying to jump on the band wagon cause they can do no better with the UBP baggage they have inherited. Glad Burch is back cause it sure will be a silly season.

  5. Star man says:

The UBP is defunct, haven’t you noticed, Swan twins? Or am I missing something? Seriously, what is going on with your party?

  6. specialgirl4 says:

So the UBP are still kicking, and holding on to, as this must suggest that the UBP are the OBA? Are they still alive or just a wish by the OBA they are? All the OBA cabinet members are the same UBP members. many are still holding the same cabinet ministry. Only one change in the senate, and Craig, so there is no real difference.

    • Hello says:

Please go join the OBA party, or sit down with one of their candidates and talk with them. You will definately come away with renewed energies and belief in Bermuda. You will no longer be defending the PLP or spewing, the OBA is the UBP silliness. Go do it for you.

  7. specialgirl4 says:

Listening to the recent press releases and statements by the members of OBA/UBP, tells the real story. NO change. One does not need to sit down with them, if there was change it would be evident on a daily basis, but what I have seen does not reflect much of a change. It may be in their thoughts, but their actions reveal otherwise.
