4-Yr-Old Girl Hurt, Driver Arrested
[Updated - 68-yr-old woman arrested] A 4-year-old girl received minor injuries last night [Dec.1], when she was struck by a car on Frog Lane, Devonshire. The female driver of the vehicle originally left the scene, but has since been identified.
A police spokesperson said, “Around 7pm on Thursday December 1, Police received a report of a collision. It appears that around 6pm a car was travelling on Frog Lane, Devonshire when it collided with a pedestrian.
“The car then left the scene. The victim, a four year old Southampton girl, was treated at KEMH for relatively minor injuries and later released.
“The female driver of the vehicle involved has been identified and inquiries are ongoing. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to contact PC Melesia Iris on 295-0011.”
A BlackBerry message, which appeared to be from the child’s mother, started circulating last night. It described the incident, car and driver involved, and went to plead for assistance from the public to find the driver, with recipients asked to pass the message forward to their contacts.
Update 4.46pm: The Police confirm the driver has been arrested. A Police spokesperson said, “A 68 year old Smith’s parish woman has been arrested after the car she was driving collided with a pedestrian in the Frog Lane, Devonshire area around 6pm on Thursday December 1.
“In addition, the vehicle involved has been impounded by police. The victim, a four year old Southampton girl was treated at KEMH for relatively minor injuries and later released. Inquiries into this matter are ongoing.”

Then the mother had the nerve to walk off the scene what u want the driver do sit there and look at the Sky… And how in the world. This is because the cars sold in Bermuda are to big for its roads & the no driving while on cell phone law is not enforced by bps. Many children have died already here because of this & nobody seems to realize why. Worse yet the drivers get off on some dumb excuse that the jury buys. If one of my loved ones gets run over by one of these irresponsible drivers & gets off I would consider running them over & use one of the lame excuses they used. “Your honor the sun was in my eyes. Your honor they ran out in front of me. Your honor my brakes on my new massive SUV with highway cruise control & overdrive that I only use to go half a mile to work so I can show off to my friends brakes failed all of a sudden.” If you kill someone with your car your worse then the gangsters shooting other gangsters because your killing an innocent & you should be tried in that same light. If you want to showboat your private off road/construction vehicle thats really made for climbing mountains & North American cross country trips you should drive extra slow with it & keep your cell phone up your backside where it belongs.
Where’s your proof that too big cars and talking on the phone was the reason? Who are the many children who have died from that here? I can only recall one little girl who was ran over and killed years ago. If cars are too big for Bermuda then buses and trucks are as well. You are jumping the gun here. It’s a terrible thing to happen but you don’t know if those are the reasons.

I find it hard to believe that a WOMAN would leave an injured 4 year old child, she allegedly hit, on the roadside and just drive off. Unless she was drunk.

A woman left the Scene when she hit me off my RC 50 on the intersection by Bank of Bermuda on Church Street. They said my bike and me did cartwheels. She stopped by the bank put her head out her window and kept going. Lucky I had my helmet on good. I tried to stop the back of my head from hitting the ground but the force was too great… Baamm! felt it go right through me helmet. she is lucky im solid like a rock. This was about 15 or more years ago BB not even though of yet. So you cant say just because she is a woman your giving her the benefit of the doubt. Morals in women have been on a steady decline for a long time and it’s at an all-time low. So sad because, women are the back bone of the island.

I regret and withdraw my above post. My understanding is that the little girl was not actually hit by the car at all. I’m sure the details will emerge. The driver appears to have been unfairly accused, from what I’ve heard.
Nevertheless, let’s wait for the facts before we change our minds AGAIN. Too much hearsay in this country.
