Video: Teresa Perozzi Returns Home
Boxing champion Teresa Perozzi — and her new championship belt — returned home this afternoon [Jan.1] after winning the WBA Middleweight Title in Trinidad & Tobago.
On December 30th, the 38-year-old boxer added another belt to her collection, winning the WBA Middleweight Title and the WBC Silver/Final Elimination
She took on Lorissa Rivas, a 29-year-old American-born fighter with Trinidad and Tobago roots, earning a split-decision victory to take the vacant WBA World Title. She is pictured below with the WBA belt at the airport earlier today.
This was Ms Perozzi’s eighth win in 13 bouts [with four defeats and a draw], while Ms Rivas fell to four wins and three defeats in her seven professional tussle.
She was greeted by the Acting Minister of Sports Zane DeSilva and the Director of Youth, Sports and Recreation Norbert Simons, who both congratulated her on the win. Minister Desilva called it “fantastic news not only for Teresa but for Bermuda.”
Speaking at the airport, Ms Perozzi said, “The fight was about what I had heard and expected, she came out to fight and I put it on her first round. She was stunned, she was hurt, so she never came forward after the first round which was exactly what I wanted to do.”
“I really used my strategy, I was smart, I didn’t have quite the confidence I would have liked to really have pressured her as much as I wanted to, so it went the whole ten rounds.”
“Ten rounds is alot of rounds,” said Ms Perozzi. “It’s about 30 minutes in the ring. So I kind of held back a bit, I let her off the hook a few times. I was told by alot of people she may have won one round.”
Asked about a possible rematch, Ms Perozzi said: “The promoter would love a rematch. He is talking end of February, but I would be surprised if she would get in the ring with me again to be honest.”
Simply amazing. Well done.
Awesome news….great to see all of her hard work paid off. Great role model as well.
your the greatest lady boxer ever congratulations
Zane likes all of that we all know what he is like as soon as a Bermudian does something abroad they all want to jump aboard. You should ask them to pay for your whole trip.
Well done keep up the good work.
Congratulations Teresa,
Thanks for your success for all of us.
I wish you well
WELL DONE TERESA YOUR THE BEST FROM ALL OF US IN BERMUDA!!!!!! AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!
Well done Ms Perozzi for representing Bermuda!
But according to her online Biography, she is an American born in New Hampshire.
She is American born, however moved here when she was 7 years old and is Bermudian.
Thanks for the clarification, but to further add to this, yes she moved here when she was 7 with her American mother and Bermudian stepfather. So she is not Bermudian by birth, but through the legal and immigration policies?
From our standpoint, we generally don’t get into the distinction as we go with the concept that a Bermudian is a Bermudian, and we are always pleased to report the accomplishments of all Bermudians…and this definitely qualifies as it’s a great accomplishment by Ms Perozzi.
@Paw Paw. You imply without question that Bermudians who are not Bermudian by birth are somehow 2nd class. Well to hell with that crap attitude and stop smoke’n them pawpaw seeds!!!!!
PAW, Teresa is BERMUDIAN!!!! The law is the law, & until BDA BECOMES INDEPENDENT, IT IS AS IT IS. Let us build BDA from its present position, be acceptable, give opinions, be respectful more & maybe we who want Independence will give those against it a better reason to say YES FOR INDEPENDENCE!!!
Point taken. Just curious that’s all. Is there a crime to asking a question without implication?
Unfortunately there is no crime in being a Bigot and an Idiot!!!!!
@Paw Paw I’m a 6 foot 245lb black guy. Who was born in North Carolina to an American woman and a Bermudian man. That man raised Teresa and she is my sister. period. She has lived in BDA for 30 years and reps it as her home. She is as much Bermy as you or anyone else.
A little Xenophobia creeping in there, Paw Paw? If she were black would you have asked the same question? Just asking’.
Well done, Teresa!
Congratulations Teresa , I am no professional Boxer so I would be out of place offering advice . I only know that in general the more you do something ;the better you get at it and the more confident you get . You go girl , long may you reign as Champ .
CONGRATULATIONS TERESSA, A WORLD CHAMPION FROM BDA, HOOORAY, A BERMUDIAN
