Restaurant: ‘Pay What You Can For Dinner’

May 21, 2012

A local restaurant will be offering a night where customers are invited to “pay what they can” for dinner, with the restaurant saying the idea is that during these times of economic challenges, people can still enjoy good food and share love in the community.

Island Hi Eatery said there will be no prices on the menu that night, and people are welcome to pay what amount they can. The offer is open on Wednesday [May 23] between 5pm – 9pm at Island Hi Eatery located on Parliament Street in Hamilton.

Hell man , don’t tell Wayne Furbert about this , he’ll try to sing for his supper .

  2. theotherside says:

Surely there must be more to this story than what was printed. I applaud the effort, but fear the reality of how this might turn out. Perhaps I don’t have enough faith in humanity, but I think they are setting themselves up for a let down.

  3. peoples says:

i know this dude he good people and he got a good heart i eat there all the time
i can say his heart is def in the right place.

  4. Whistling Frog says:

Hmmm! What a great idea… You think this would catch on with the rest of the country? Than again, most of the businesses you go into don’t have prices on anything anyway…

  5. tricks are for kids.. says:

He is a great guy! BUT I do hope that there are guidelines in place because I would hate for anyone to take advantage…..Great incentive however, hopefully others will follow…..

    • Tommy Chong says:

The main meals on island hi’s menu are wraps & subs so I don’t think it will be easy to take advantage of unless someone gorges themselves with them.

Its sad to think about but I can’t even imagine any others following this guy’s kindness. Many have recently increased menu prices despite recession. Bermuda business is very strange compared to the rest of the world in the way items are priced. There are not many places here like island hi that will offer you a truly reasonable price on a simple sub or wrap but even if overpriced these places still make a lot of business. It just goes to show that there are ether still many in Bermuda who live beyond there means or many who still do not even feel a slight pinch from recession. Island Hi’s owner is a one off in unconditional kindness in the restaurant business. I’ve seen & heard of things this guy has done out of the kindness of his heart that many would not in this business.

    What a thoughtful person.
But Im curious to know how many people will show up in designer jeans and $200 sneakers..

  7. Always Watching says:

I applaud this gentleman’s effort to help out and look forward to the day..

  8. Truth is killin' me... says:

Too bad BELCO, MarketPlace and the Government can’t run with this idea and “Pay what you can for Belco Bills, groceries and Taxes!”

    • Tee says:

I hope this Government is out and new people can at least try and make changes. Everytime I look GP car driving through BDA talking on a cell.. HEY PLP SET AN EXAMPLE….. HYPOCRITS/ JOKERS/ MONEY HOUNDS/ BULL SH$TTERS/

  9. Peace says:

That is a blessing. May their shop be blessed.

  10. Restaurant visitor says:

What the restaurants really need to do is to lose the 17%+ gratuity added “for our convenience”. Service would dramatically improve if the tips were at the customer’s discretion.

    • JJ says:

      Agree 100%!!!!!!!

    • Mike says:

What many people fail to realize or simple don’t know is that the 17% gratuity does not have to be paid. If you feel the level of service or food was of poor quality or for whatever reason does not warrant paying gratuities you can simply request it removed from your bill and the restaurant must do so. The gratuities are literally added “for your convenience”.

  11. Tommy Chong says:

    Bravo! I salute you sir!

This guy is one of the happiest people I’ve ever met & it seems kindness flows throughout him all the time. Anytime I’m in Island Hi its always a pleasure to do business with the owner as he keeps his staff’s efficiency up to par & jumps in when needed & does it with a big smile.

Once I went for a lunch run to this place & when getting ready to pay found I was $5 short. I told the owner to hold the food & I’d be back with the rest he in turn told me not to worry about it & pay him back when I was next in. This was shocking to me because this place just opened & he’d only seen me in once before but trusted my honesty. There’s a saying that kindness given comes back around & maybe this is why this guy is always smiling. What a great example of a human being.

  12. Bullseye says:

Nice move! I will make a mission to come eat from you another day.

  13. pebblebeach says:

    Good luck with that…

  14. Eh eh says:

God Bless you Island Hi, have never been there as I don’t eat wraps and subs etc, but will most certainly tell others to stop by and support you.

  15. Carla Rose Louise Wilkinson says:

Wow! What an amazing act of kindness and compassion! Let’s hope it catches on… How about “all” the restaurants in Bermuda have a “once a month”, “pay what you can day?”… Yeah right, not likely. Unfortunately the greedy outweigh the needy…Kudos to Island Hi-Eatery
