Junior Track Athletes Finish With Five Medals

The Bermuda Track & Field Association sent 12 athletes to the Central American and Caribbean [CAC] Junior Championships in San Salvador, and the team performed very well winning five medals and placing 9th overall out of 23 countries.

Kyrah Scraders won two gold medals and set a new CAC Jnr Record, Justin Donawa won a silver medal, and both Taylor Ashley Bean and Shaquille Dill won bronze medals.

BTFA President Donna Watson said, “Kyrah Scraders won two gold medals; in the 800m in the 17 and under age group with a PB of 2:12.57 and the 1500m with a time of 4:43.65 which was a new CAC Jnr Record. Rachel Fox placed 4th in the 800m and Shutae Hendrickson placed 6th in the 1500m

“Taahirah Butterfield competed in the 100m and 200m in the 17 and under age group. Taahirah placed 3rd in the 100m moving onto the finals placing 7th in the finals. She did not advance to the finals in the 200. Taylor Ashley Bean placed 3rd in the U20 divsion in a time of 11:25.48.

“Kyle Webb participated in the 100m & 200m 17 and under division. Kyle advanced to both finals running a PB in each of the events. Kyle ran 10.65 in the 100m in the semi-finals placing 2nd which was just off the qualifying time of 10.64 for the World Junior Championships. He then placed 5th in the finals.

“Kyle then came back and ran a time of 21.38 a PB and placed 3rd in the 200m semi finals securing his place for the World Junior Championship team with the qualifying standard being 21.55. Kyle then placed 8th in the finals. Kidane Callendar also participated in the 100m and 200m but did not advance to the finals.

Shaquille Dill participated in the 400m & 800m in the U20 division. Shaquille placed 3rd in the 800m semi-finals advancing to the finals.We were pretty sure Shaquille would be able to finish in the top 3 in the finals but that did not materialize and Shaquille placed 8th.

“The 2nd and 3rd place times where definitely not faster than his PB. Shaquille redeemed himself in the 400m placing 1st in the semi-final with a PB of 47.27. He then ran another PB of 47.16 to place 3rd overall in the 400m final.

“Juma Mouchette competing in the U20 division placed 9th in the 1500m with a PB of 4:07.70. Dage Minors competed in the 17 and under age division in the 800m and 1500m. Dage placed 3rd in the semi-final in the 800m advancing to the finals and placed 7th in the finals. Dage placed 5th in the 1500m finals.

“Chas Smith in the 17 and under age division competed in the LJ and HJ. Chas placed 5th in the High Jump with 4th, 5th and 6th all jumping 1.90m. Chas placed 8th in the Long Jump.

“Justin Donawa competed in the 17 and under age division in the Long Jump and Triple Jump. Justin placed 5th in the Long Jump with a PB of 6.59. He then placed 2nd in the triple jump with a leap of 14.49m.

“Bermuda entered a 4X100m relay in the 17 and under age division and they placed 4th out of 7 teams in a time of 42.19. Overall Bermuda performed well at these games and we are very proud of them and know that each of them gave 100% and the conditions in San Salvador were very hot.

“Traveling to the World Junior Championships is Shaquille Dill 400m & 800m and Kyle Webb competing in the 200m. Traveling with the team to Barcelona, Spain is Devon Bean as Coach. They will be flying directly from the CAC Jnr Championships, participating in a week long camp before the Championships begin.”

    Well done athlete’s , at least there is one Bermudian who thinks your efforts are worthy of a comment on the #1 local blog . If you were caged in Westgate like a beast , folks would be keeping the moderators up all night posting stupidness to make themselves feel superior . Know that YOU the athlete are SUPERIOR in every-way . Again Well Done and keep medalling where-ever and when ever you compete .

    Additionally, this is a great way for our athletes to get exposure to the level of competition to ensure that they are prepared to compete on the world stage. These performances prove that we CAN and DO produce world class athletes…hope as a country we can be more supportive of our athletes in the future.
